Because we're middle class compared to everyone we grew up with.
South Beverly Hills at one time did have a (very heavily Jewish) middle class population, before it became as expensive as it is now. The only remnants of the old middle class southside BH are elderly people living in rent controlled apartments and some residents in the La Cienega Park area.
I've referred to that area as "normal Beverly Hills", the 90210 snobs called it "West LA, not Beverly Hills" (although SE Beverly Hills is more like the Miracle Mile next door than West LA ; it's in the part of Beverly Hills that's got a 323 area code not a 310 area code)
i understand , i lived in malibu for while , when you drop that name everyone thinks your a multimillionaire its not always true. Its pretty sad malibu once in the 1960's surf rider was surf city USA has turned into such a hollywood yuppie stronghold. There are middle class people that live in Malibu too , that are not always movie producers and celebrities business ceos . When i moved to malibu in the early 80's regular people, i guess upper middle class people lived in Malibu like teachers , doctors , and dentists etc. by the early nineties though the yuppification process was beginning at a rapid pace .

I don't understand why kids from rich areas are ashamed to be from nice places.
The fact is Beverly Hills is extremely rich. The "poor" parts of Beverly Hills rival the richest sections of most cities in the US. You probably believed you grew up "middle class" because you didn't live in a 10 million dollar mansion like the ones that you were accustomed to seeing.
I know many people like this who come from multi-generational wealth and the top 5% in the nation and insist and believe they are middle class just because there house doesn't look like Snoop Doggs on cribs.
Actually, 90210 doesn't even rank in the top 100 for richest zip codes in America. Even Oakland has a richer neighborhood than Beverly Hills according to the IRS.

Median gross rent in Beverly Hills (most people in Beverly Hills rent) in 2009 was $1791....about the same as San Francisco and below median rent in NYC. So basically, if you can afford to live in New York or San Francisco or Honolulu, you can afford to live in Beverly Hills. I don't think that necessarily makes you rich.

you sure that list is valid? I live in JC and the area that pertains to that zip code us no where near rich, in fact it is one of the poorest area of the city. I would understand if it was around Van Vorst Park or Paulus Hook in downtown but definitely not Westside.
And i do know how you feel about how certain perceptions people have of where your from. Being from JC, its either we are ny, try to be like ny, we stink and suck, or we're just like that stupid mtv show which none of is true. No "REAL" JC'ers wants to be part of ny. only transplants. Parts of JC and NJ do stink but not all, ny has more places where it stinks. And that mtv show doesn't even represent NJ, how can you think that's NJ when ONLY 2 PEOPLE FROM THE CAST ARE ACTUALLY FROM NJ, they mostly come from ny.
I just bashed ny in the process i know, but most of the reputation NJ gets comes from ny'ers "thinking" what JC really is.
Why does it sound so weird? I was raised in Beverly Hills and I feel uncomfortable telling people "I'm from Beverly Hills", even though most of Beverly Hills isn't even near rich. Beverly Hills is so strangely exaggerated in the media.
I just feel so weird when I go out of town and tell people were I am from. They just stare at me weird.

LOL! I can easily relate to that one. I have been to Beverly Hills. In my opinion, it is a very interesting part of the L.A. area and nice to visit (but at the same time kinda weird even for that lavish lifestyle.) It's even what I would consider one of the most CONGESTED parts of the L.A. area (especially on Santa Monica Blvd.) I used to dream of living there, but now I could care less. It's even exaggerated in movies. A good example would be that 1980's classic ''Down and Out in Beverly Hills.''

Wow! Miami Beach, FL made #4. Not surprising especially when you see elegant homes with boats in front of them. Southern Florida, IMO, is a lot like L.A. (at least it was when I was last there.) I used to dream of living in Beverly Hills but not anymore.
We bought property in BH mainly so our children could benefit from the BH school district. We lived in BH for over 17 years.
Two of my children have a problem with telling new friends and others that they graduated from Beverly Hills High! Lol, lol. They say they feel embarassed for some reason and uncomfortable.
Also, there are not that many "stars" living in BH as you may think. That was in the past, and those who remain are mostly the older stars who had property way back in the day.
There are expensive stores and restaurants, however not everyplace is overly expensive. You can still get an ice cream cone, double dip for about $2.00 at Thrifty's (I mean Rite-Aid), on Canon Dr. Lol!

Beverly Hills is still one of the most expensive places to live. IRS statements don't reflect the whole story as many of the residents are part timers who officially reside from other parts of the country or abroad. I would venture to guess being somewhat familiar with the area that you have a significant number of people from the NE who have second homes there. Some of the most expensive homes in Newport/Laguna Beach which sell for higher PSF than Beverly Hills have owners from places New York and Texas. New York MSA alone has a pretty solid ownership of the high dollar markets in Southern California. Most expensive zips and incomes don't always coincide on paper.

What source is that? This just isn't accurate. The Forbes wealthiest zip codes is a better indicator, and Beverly Hills is way up there.
Jersey City is pretty much a run down ghetto. There's no way it's #5. The median household income there is 37k.
That list is hogwash! Where is Laguna Beach, Palos Verdes, Lake Forest... Why are Pittsburgh and Oakland of all places on there?? Blue collar, lower middle class cities.
