The area is adjacent to Silver Lake and Frogtown, but I've read some stories that make it sound like a rough neighborhood. Would it be safe for a single white gay guy?

Are you looking to reside there? If so, it would be a better choice to look at Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Mount Washington in L.A. and Adams Hill in Glendale. All are adjacent/close to Elysian Valley, but quality of life is greatly improved in the aforementioned areas.

Elysian Valley's a safe area although it's near some areas that aren't safe like Cypress Park across the river.

IMO it would be just fine for a single white guy.

Thanks. Those areas are nicer, but housing prices are significantly higher.

You gotta recognize that the culture of Frogtown isn't going to change: you need to adapt to it. So if you get frustrated by people playing music or barking dogs or litter or any of the other working-class Latino vibe, you're going to just have to learn to deal.
