Hi there,

My family and I are looking into moving to LA for work.
I would be working in downtown hollywood.
Where best can anyone recommend living and bringing up a family with two children, aged 13 and 10.
Rentwise I am looking between $3-400,000 per month and just want a really nice pleasant safe neighbourhood

Any help would be appreciated as I have no knowledge of LA at all!
Also what web-sites are best to find homes for rent, as ~I am struggling on the net to find any decent sites?

Many thanks

400,000 per month should get you a nice place

depends on what your commute tolerance is. hollywood is notoriously difficult to get to during rush hour. the 101 is a terrible freeway. burbank may be worth considering if you plan on using public schools.

Do you want public schools? I don't know what the LAUSD options are like around there, but they can vary widely. Neighborhoods like Los Feliz and Silverlake are nearby and very nice, but again, not sure about their school options.

Craigslist and westside rentals are the best options for home rentals.

If you don't want LAUSD, Burbank is known for being family-friendly (and would be a short commute), and the schools have a decent reputation.

Sorry about that -- LAUSD is Los Angeles Unified School District.

LAUSD is definitely sub par. There are a few good schools, but they are few and far between. The magnet schools are decent. Burbank and Pasadena have much better schools.

What exactly is "downtown" Hollywood?

That actually might affect advice you will be given.

Since the oldest kid is 13, that means starting high school soon. And that means no LAUSD.

So what you are left with is Burbank, Culver City, La Cresenta, South Pasadena.

All will be healthy drives to the heart of Hollywood(although I'm not sure thats what you meant by "downtown" Hollywood), but nothing intolerable. Assuming you exit Highland, those cities are all around a 30-45 minute morning drive from Highland Ave/Hollywood Bl. Mostly due to surface street driving rather than traffic. Burbank is closest and should be a 25-40 minute drive in the morning depending on where you are. South Pasadena won't be much more than that, though the 110 is kinda a mess heading through downtown.

For an overview of rentals, check out craigslist...I wouldn't use that as my ultimate guide, but its useful to get an idea of price and quality. Westside rentals has worked well for me in the past.
