There have always been Latinos on the east side of the valley. Granted, there are far more now than 50 years ago. But Ritchie Valenzuela (aka Valens) was just another kid from Pacoima.

I am reading Adam Carolla's biography "Not Taco Bell Material". He grew up in North Hollywood and attended Colfax Elementary. He has a picture of his 5th grade class in there (1976). Basically every face is white. For folks that say the valley didn't use to be all white (or majority white) you don't know what you're talking about. The author is correct in asking where did all those 5th graders go? We all know Adam now lives in the Hollywood Hills by the way.

Actually, LA is approximately 45% Hispanic according to Arbitron, which measures radio station ratings. The percentage of African-Americans has been dropping for two decades as well, as blacks fled for Atlanta, Charlotte and other cities in droves.

The percentage of Asians has been in the mid-teens for ages.

Default Up to NorCal

Just as a follow up, my family and I moved to the Bay Area (Walnut Creek, CA). This whole area is very nice and very white (as are Danville and San Ramon). Excellent schools too. Reminds me of how L.A. used to be before immigration swamped it. The politics are pretty weird up here with lots of lefty extremists with 20 bumper stickers but there was quite a bit of that down in west L.A. too. Must say I miss home and the weather but change is good.

Replaced with Kardashians. One step forward, two steps back.

I guess it's hip, but overrated. Usually over-used by many who dont appear to have any idea of what brotherhood might mean.
