Several months ago we were stranded in Portland Oregon after a job in Seattle cancelled after we were within 100 miles of it from Corpus Christi , Texas.. Oh Yay!!.....Anyway my husband is an aviation mechanic and has been offered a position in Hawthorne. Is this safe ? Oregon is slowly driving us crazy... I dont need to buy anything, we always rent . Condo, house or apt . Whatever is the easiest/safest at the time. We do have our youngest daughter still with us age 10 going into the 6th grade . Any neighborhood suggestions.. We are paying around 1000 for a 2 bed apt in Portland + utilities. but can go higher.

So , I wasnt sure of where NOT to go. Any suggestions in a 15/20 mile radius is welcomed. Otherwise Ill be glad to look in the above mentioned areas.

I'm just going to throw out a few places based on what I've read on CD and from buddies of mine at work. Not sure if these places will be in your budget or commuting requirements. One thing is the Green Line train runs west from Norwalk to the Hawthorne airport area - might expand your radius a bit.

Brea
Torrance
Culver City
Cerritos
La Mirada
Fullerton
Los Almitos (getting quite a ways away now)
Cypress

Not if the guy can pull a 6-230 or use the green line. What else are we going to tell him? He's got a sixth grader so he will be looking for decent schools on a small budget - and even those towns aren't that cheap. The beach cities are too pricey.

Hawthorne is a VERY BIG city and there are good and bad areas. We live in the Wiseburn district - We bought my husbands family home which was built in 1970. I love it here. I grew up in Torrance. I would not buy anything east of Inglewood Avenue. You start going into those areas it's not that good. HollyGlen is very nice but is terribly expensive. It's a small community by us...We are off Oceangate and Rosecrans and so close to every thing. Schools by us are good! High schools are another story. Wiseburn is trying to get a new high school built and I hope it happens. We have no children at home anymore but I think it would be wonderful for our area. We also have a fantastic Neighborhood Watch program. Neighbors look out for one another...We have a nice mix of different cultures in our neighborhood. Many have lived here for a long time...It's really a great area. I do not say that because we live here. Prior to us buying the family home - my mother-in-law lived here for years and they never once had a problem. Again, a very large city with good /bad areas JUST LIKE any where else.
