Default Biking in LA

I'm planning a move to the Silver Lake area (from Boston, at the end of August) and will be buying a bicycle for transportation and recreational purposes -- I'm curious about bike paths in parks as well as riding on streets. Does anyone else ride a bike and have suggestions about nice places to ride around the city? Even better, suggestions about how to approach riding a bike as a method of transportation?

It's possible, but freaking scary in some places. The key is to make sure that you're daily commute is on dedicated paths, or at least bike lanes, to reduce the odds of you getting hit. I'll write more later. However, if you live within 15 miles of work (or of a mass transit system that you can take to work) biking to work is a million times less stressful than sitting in traffic generating smog.
