What do you mean "cracked up to be"?

Admit it, your delusion of fictional TV shows being an accurate depiction of reality was the cause of your disappointment.

On a totally different note, I went to Dallas at about this time last year and it was nothing like what I saw on tv. I kept telling people that and they were pretty sympathetic. Seems to happen a lot with visitors to the city.

If you were "surprised" the city has horrible traffic you clearly were misinformed and/or had false expectations.

I think this city has a lot going for it. It's taking me months to really get a feel of this city.

All cynicism aside, yes, the traffic is horrible. The compassion factor and level of true sincerity among people is a fraction of the general standard elsewhere. This has a lot to do with opportunism, wildly inflated egos and an encouraged culture of vapid, beauty-based existence (this is the home of showbiz in all its many forms, after all, with its infinite hanger-ons and superstars waiting to be discovered).

All the same, there are a couple good qualities to the city and its outlying neighbors. Silverlake is an odd little hipster mecca, but it's got a great art/tattoo/music scene. I live in Encino currently, and enjoy the hell out of the Malibu Canyon hills and trails, where it seems like the farthest thing from the cement grid of Los Angeles.

The crime is depressing. The indifference to suffering is depressing. The opportunist me-me-me atmosphere is depressing. I'm not denying that. The culture clash in Encino is pretty intense as well, with many middle-eastern cultures living on top of one another, and many conflicts arising as a result. Old ladies screaming at each other in grocery stores, that kind of thing. No good.

I'm planning to get the hell out of the city, and SoCal on the whole, after spending a decade here. Checking Portland out at the end of the month to see if it'll be a better fit for my family.

If you have enough money to insulate yourself, just about anywhere can be wonderful.
