What do you think?

While I don't approve of judging people based on money and looks, and I don't think its healthy to take things to an extreme that are self-destructive to their health or bank account,

it seems that when people (for example in the midwest, including Chicago) describe LA and southern California, they use words like shallow and superficial to desribe the vibe and culture,

when in reality I think it is just jealousy by those who don't want to put forth the effort by going to the gym regularly, eating healthy, and dressing stylishly, and spending a little more money on a stylish haircut.

What do you think?

Does it seem like people desribe those who try to look stylish and slim and in shape as being "conceited" "shallow" or "materialistic"

I think the "conceited", "shallow", etc comes into play when individuals think that just because they are more "stylish" and "slim", that makes them a better person than everyone else. There's no concern about whether or not a person is kind or not, it's all about whether they are wearing a size 00. And I do believe there is a great deal of that attitude out here in LA. "I'm better than you because I look better". It's sad, really.

I think many people here are superficial but that's what makes the world go around. Other places, it's acceptable to be fat, overeat, have bad hygiene, have a regular or low paying job, stay with the same person for an entire lifetime, and be old. LA isn't for everybody and they don't call Hollywood "Tinseltown" for nothing.

When people outside of California especially those who have never been here think of LA, they think of glamor. They think about the way LA is shown thru the media. Breaking News coverage of Lindsey Lohan going to jail for being a stupid ***** and high speed car chases which last for hours most of the time.

Two people with similar education, employment history, age group, background.

Differances are in how the two look, one is stylish and in shape, The other is 50lbs over weight and buys their clothes from Wal-mart.

Who do you hire?

The fat one, cause the one who takes care of themselves is often smart enough not to give a rat's tail about slaving at the job for the uncle capitalist.

You see I would hire the one that is in control of their life, meaning the one that is in shape. The perception is that they will be a go getter that will build the business for the "uncle capitalist" as you put it. For me and I am not saying this is right, when two people have similar backgrounds and everything else is equal, as in they are pleasant to talk to, looks like they would fit in at the organization, ect, ect. When everything is so similar that it comes down to something, the look will win out in my vote.

I'm that slim, well-dressed person... and I can assure you I can care less about putting myself into any kind of job unless there's SERIOUS flexibility, like plenty of telecommute. Well at least in engineering, overweight people often make great employees--because many of them don't mind to sit in one place for like 12 hours... and most nerds don't care about dressing up. No employer will make me sit in the office for over 8 hours (and most of them want to)--sorry I got to hit the gym or dance studio, thankxbye! So, it depends if you're hiring for customer service or for tech position...
