My late father worked in aerospace (Douglas, Autonetics/Rockwell, a couple of others) as a machinist most of his life. The industry went through boom and bust cycles during the Vietnam War era and so he would get laid off and then have to go elsewhere to find a job. He had two different stints at Autonetics before he quit to go to college (after he had put my mom through nursing school).
One of the other posters remarked about being able to find really nice houses back in those days for 80 grand. I remembered thinking during high school, just as housing prices were reaching six figures, "geez, who can afford to live in a $100,000 house?" I chuckle about that now.

Good news and bad news for Southern California:
"Boeing Co. is expected to announce today that it has won a contract potentially worth nearly $1 billion to build satellites for telecommunications giant Intelsat Ltd."

"Boeing will issue layoff notices to approximately 250 employees at various sites, including those in Alabama, Alaska, California and Colorado."

So what it really boils down to in the individual companies, divisions and depts is how much notice management gives the displaced workers. And more importantly do they offer them other options within the organization (if any exist within their area of expertise).

It's even more spectacular when you get to watch it in a conference room with a big screen surrounded by people who support the SSME program.

My wife and I got to view it from the VIP area at KSC. Dick Cheney's wife was there. It is three miles from the pad. It's as close as anybody other than emergency crews can view it. It is pretty interesting watching the shuttle lift off and 15 seconds later the sound sound hits you.

That must be fantastic and awesome like no other experience! I wish I could see a Space Shuttle launch. People on the SSME program here go all the time to see a launch there. I'm on another program; I've been to Vandenburg, but those launches just don't compare with the Shuttle launches.
