Okay dawg, you're freakin' me out! You mentioned a snapping sound and then a violent jolt and then shaking. Wow. You really got it there. In west LA I did not hear the snapping sound, but did feel a very hard jolt and that really scared me because it was strong and out of nowhere and then shaking for about two, maybe three Missisippis (spelling?)

There is a chance of it being that, but the more hours away from the main event the less likely it will happen.

I definitely felt it. Lasted about 10 seconds, easily felt.

The foreshock for the Northridge quake was several days in advance.

On the USGS they record 2 areas of Northridge as being a 5--91324 and 91326 for the present Chatsworth quake. I wonder why it is recorded as higher then the epicenter. I feel sorry for anyone that was involved in the Northridge quake. That is enough to make anyone edgy or at least very anxious when things get to shaking around here.

I'm curious. Do you know what the foreshock was like? How long, stuff like that?

The 5 is not the Richter scale, it is the modified mercalli scale.

Not exactly. I was working at a cafe and heard a window shaking for about ten seconds, as a customer stated it was an earthquake. I guess, though, the intensity and duration was about what we had tonight.

Is the mercalli scale based on people's responses and the Richter the recording device rating? One thing I am fascinated by is how people are reporting in everywhere from Santa Barbara (II & III's) and to Long Beach. Also many other areas are posting responses that are adding up to a lot of IVs.

Mercalli scale would be even better if we had a Little Italy in Los Angeles.
