Los Angeles raises minimum wage to $15 per hour

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Mayor Eric Garcetti signed into law on Saturday an ordinance that makes Los Angeles the biggest city in the nation to gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

He called the law "a major victory for our city" at a signing ceremony in south Los Angeles, and said the wage increases will enable working families to lift themselves out of poverty.

"LA as a whole will benefit from this boost: We have always prospered the most when everyone is able to spend money into our economy," Garcetti said.

The law will boost the minimum wage to $10.50 in July 2016, followed by annual increases to $12, $13.25, $14.25 and $15. Small businesses and certain nonprofits get an extra year to phase in the increases.

Calls for raising the minimum wage have grown as the nation struggles with fallout from the recession, worsening income inequality, persistent poverty and the challenges of immigration and the global economy.

Seattle and San Francisco also have phased-in minimum wage laws that eventually require hourly pay of $15 an hour, or annual pay of about $31,200 for a full-time job. Last year, Chicago passed a phased-in minimum wage increase to $13 an hour.

Last week, the California Senate approved a plan to raise the statewide minimum wage again, lifting it to $13 an hour in 2017 and tying it to the rate of inflation after that

Next will come a flood of doomsaying, telling us that this will lead to the death of Los Angeles. Every company and small business will leave or go under! The wealthy will pull up stakes and go to more business-friendly cities! Hollywood will move to the South! Los Angeles will crumble and then the entire state will follow!
But of course what will actually happen is a few businesses here and there will close or move but most will do just fine or better and the economy will see a boost every time the wage increases go into effect, just like how it's always been. When more people have money to spend that money goes right into businesses' pockets, leading to higher earnings than before.

Because of condom regulations not minimum wage.

Yes, the doomsayers will emerge. Conveniently ignoring the fact that article after article has been written confirming that nothing is more toxic to the American economy than the ridiculous income disparity that has bloomed in recent years.

Guess what. Businesses don't stay in business to lose money. The money payed to workers will come from higher priced products produced by said company. Or workers will get layed off. Sheesh. Even the great Oprah layed off workers while her company was losing money.

What I don't get from all the tree-huggers out in California why they walk around with their Apple phones, Googling Facebook while those companies have their money parked offshore avoiding taxes. No outrage when Obama, the man of the people, sits down at Silicon Valley with his hand out.

Don't tell me well Republicans do the same thing. We already know Republicans are the party of the rich.

Which is hilarious because the Republicans VOTERS aren't even in the same bracket. Heck 90% of these flag waving morons make less than 20k if that.

Maybe because they realize that money doesn't appear out of thin air in endless supply. Democrats love reaching their grubby hands into other people's pockets. Doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, you should have the right to the money you earned and not have to give it up to some good-for-nothings to throw away at their discretion on BS social programs that do nothing but create a cycle of poverty to ensure that the good-for-nothings stay in power.
