This all seems pretty ridiculous to me.
My understanding is that you cannot BEGIN your crossing until you see the "white man walking" signal but once you are in the intersection, continue your crossing even if the red hand is flashing. The red hand flashing just means don't begin your crossing as you would not have time to complete it (of course, I beg to differ on that )

Wasn't there a Monty Python gag about this years ago? Walk sign lights up and half way across, it turns red and he turns around and goes back to wait for it again? Goes on for several hilarious cycles?

Decades ago I recieved a jaywalking ticket and forgot to pay for it. It went to warrant.

Pay the ticket. When I'm driving and see people walking across even when if the hand is red, it's disrespectful to drivers that have to wait. And we can't just run them over.

Which crime did they ignore in order issue a citation. You are aware that the officers carry radios and are for the most part directed to crimes that way.

First, is this even legal? I could understand if the light were red and I was in a controled intersection, or if I was truely jaywalking from one side of the street to another, but seriously...

What are your thoughts on this law?

Any ideas on how to fight this ticket?

I really don't want to pay $106 for following the law.
Go to court and fight it. You have a good chance of having it released or at least reduced.

You should file for an extension, then go to court. If the officer doesnt show you will win. If he does show, tell the judge you thought it was ok since the light was red. Then again, you need to factor time into all this. Is it worth your time?

This is correct.

People in Downtown LA are unbelievably horrible when it comes to violating this law and I'm very happy the police enforce this jaywalking law. These pedestrians cause immense traffic jams.

I'll also be happy when the LAPD starts ticketing people for driving through a crosswalk before pedestrians clear the crosswalk.

All of the above violations create very dangerous situations for pedestrians and I don't really care why the city is directing the LAPD to enforce these laws currently, I'm just happy that they are being enforced.

Do jaywalking citations affect your auto insurance? If not, why bother fighting it? You may save the $105, but consider the lost pay for taking a day off work plus the inconvenience of going to court.

I think you're okay as long as you start crossing while the sign says walk.

That just plain gets on my nerves ... Seems that before I leave the crosswalk, some antsy driver is making his right-hand turn around me! I just pray that a pedestrian never loses their footing or else they could get hit!
