It is called Franklin Canyon/Beachwood Canyon area.
It is diverse with many celebrities/producers/writers, and others in the business., living in the area. Close to Hollywood Bowl, and Highland Avenue, and close to to heart of Hollywood (actually is a part of Hollywood) A little east on Franklin will take you into Griffith Park/Los Feliz area.

Because North Hollywood is located North of Sunset Blvd, and over the hill (think Laurel Canyon) to Hollywood. North Hollywood is considered to be a part of the "Valley"

Lake Hollywood and Beachwood Canyon. The former is accessed from East Cahuenga at the Cahuenga Pass and the latter from Beachwood off Franklin. Both are in Hollywood proper.

North of Sunset is Sunset Strip and East Hollywood Hills, technically West Hollywood and Hollywood. ALL the way over Laurel Canyon into the valley will bring you to North Hollywood.

Thank you all for your replies. Now I have another question...When I was in town I slightly remember that Santa Monica Blvd was really crummy just over the freeway just south of Franklin. I remember it because I thought to myself...this is Santa Monica Blvd.? Wow, what a dump!
We stopped to buy a phone in a small shop right beyond the freeway 101, that is. The block I circled I can see clearly on the google map and the streets were flemish land and n. oxford.
A funny thing I noticed, too was this cop pulling over car after car and giving tickets right there. I had to circle the block several times waiting for my son as parking was scarce.
What I'm actually asking is that area safe overall? I didn't get south of SAnta Monica because we headed up to Franklin, our preferred address to live. thanks for all your replies

I really meant flemish lane, not flemish land.

Santa Monica Blvd goes from cruddy to gay to gorgeous, same with Sunset Blvd. It just depends where you are. It covers quite a few miles. Also, cops giving tickets is absolutely no indication of being in a good or bad part of town, it just tells you that you're in a busy one. If you were at Santa Monica and Oxford, that area is pretty cruddy. Franklin is nice, it's at the end of my block .

OK, I did remember correctly. The reason I asked is there have been a couple of apartments in that area south of santa monica and didn't know if it was a recommended neighborhood. I have a young son and 80 year old mother that will be living with me and we can't compromise on safety.
It was surprisingly ugly because just a few blocks north it's so nice. We are trying to get as close to the Celebrity Centre as possible so we can walk, not drive over as parking looks non-existant on that block.
