Default Going to school in Malibu... Closest "affordable" areas to rent in?

I'm considering transferring to Pepperdine in Malibu next year. I'll be a junior and living on campus is just not going to be a good option for me if I can avoid it. I realize that I can't afford to rent in Malibu and there aren't too many nearby residential areas. I know some students mentioned Calabasas, Westlake, and Agoura Hills, but even there rent is insane compared to every area that I've ever lived. I don't want to have to commute over a half an hour, and I'd like to say that my budget is $1000/mo., but I don't know if that's even possible. Let me know if you've got any secrets to renting in this area or if you know of particular apartment complexes that are affordable nearby. Thanks.

A lot of Pepperdine students live in Santa Monica. With $1000 a month you can get a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom with a roommate who also pays $1000 a month. Calabasas, Westlake Village, and Agoura Hills are pretty suburban and bland for a student. Malibu actually is as well because there really isn't much going on in the way of nightlife for a twenty something. The commute from Santa Monica is about 30 minutes.
