Well, as one gauge: The LA County budget is larger than 47 of our 50 states.

Los Angeles is a horizontal city.. I don't care if NYC is bigger than DTLA.. But the fact is Los Angeles total land area exceeds the crammed NY

Los Angeles County, of course, has over 75 cities, including the City of Los Angeles (plus unincorporated areas, not in any city). A little over 4,000 square miles, including the islands of Catalina and San Clemente. City of Los Angeles about 460 square miles. As noted, there is a lot of mountain and desert land included in the county that's not in the city. When tourists say they want to go to "Los Angeles," they are often thinking of much more than the city or county of L.A. (e.g., Orange County, site of Disneyland). I grew up in Van Nuys, a suburb of L.A. but within its city limits. Burbank, Santa Monica, San Fernando, West Hollywood, etc. are separate cities. My sister lives in Upland, next to Ontario in San Bernardino County, and it's solid city from L.A. to there and beyond. San Bernardino County, like Riverside County, has fewer people than L.A. County but more area, extending all the way to the Arizona and Nevada borders (with most of the eastern parts being desert, and some mountains).

LA is big...and not just the city. The county is very large as well, so that's something you should know.
I think someone said you can get to most places in 30 minutes? True! Except for rush-hour, 30-40 minutes can get you clear from the East side to the West side.
There's many smaller cities around LA that add to its look of sprawl, but know the difference. Hollywood is a district of LA, but West Hollywood is its own city. Some areas are also unincorporated (just being part of the county)
LA is definitely big, but it doesn't feel so odd once you're here.

LA is humongous. Miles and miles and miles of city all tightly packed with people.

In terms of area, LA is the fifth largest city in the USA, behind Juneau, Jacksonville, Oklahoma City & Phoenix.
