Here is a dilema: we consider moving to either Manhattan Beach or San Marino, understanding we need to spend lots of $$$ to get something livable (not townhouses or condos). but my husband works near La Cienega off 10 Freeway. From what we heard, commuting from San Marino to LaCienega off 10 Freeway could be "brutal". But Manhattan Beach houses are more expensive than those in San Marino, with very little yard. Now we look at Calabasis...What to do? Anyone has comments on commuting from San Marino to LaCienega exit off 10 Freeway? Or any recommendation if you were in our shoes?

if you can afford those areas and you want to be closer to your husband's office, then your best bet IMHO would be to consider beverly hills for public schools. all 3 cities you mentioned would be brutal commutes to/from La Cienega near the 10. your other option is to live somewhere a bit cheaper and send the kiddies to private school, of which there are many options.

La Cienega Blvd and 10fwy? Like the Culver City area?

Culver City to/from San Marino would make a very bad driving experience.

I know from personal experience--you don't want anything to do with that commute.

Another thing is that San Marino is not really close to any freeway, so there's quite a bit of surface street driving, too.

If hubby can leave for work by 6am(to arrive by 645am), its just California to the 110(or Fremont to the 10), and down to the 10. Any later than that and its a 1 hour plus drive with gridlock the entire way.

Most people who live in San Marino work in downtown L.A. Manhattan Beach is wonderful but that's still a drive from La Cienega and the 10. I'd go with Calabasas.

If you are looking in areas that are at the top of the range (price wise or near the top) why not choose a closer in area and consider private schools for the children?

Default moving to San Marino or Manhattan Beach for schools

thank you guys. we thought about just go for private schools, but it seems to us that the money spent for schools will be gone, but money used to buy home in good areas may grow (hopefully). we know San Marino, Manhattan Beach have great public schools, but don't know much about Beverly Hills. Any thoughts? It sounds like commute from/to San Marino to Culver City (off 10 FWY) may be a disaster. How long the commute will be for Calabasas? It's tough....We even think about just stay put until the LAUSD sends its decision of the lottery thing next May. If our child gets into LACES, then we stay, otherwise we need to be ready to move three months before school resmues again. What to do?

huh? trust me, the homes on the westside grow as fast if not faster than san marino & MB. consider santa monica, consider mar vista, consider westwood, consider cheviot hills, these homes don't grow? now i am baffled...

Interesting perspective. Are you looking for a great school so your child will qualify for community college?

Good school = Investment in your children's future
Home = A place to live and, maybe, a good investment.
