Converting to a Left Wing, Liberal
Hey Yall,
I am going to make the big conversion from being Conservative Republican to becoming a Left Wing, Ultra Liberal Democrat. One who loves and embraces diversity.
Therefore, my wife and children would like to move from Florida to Compton, (South Central) CA. We would like to blend in, become active in the community, have block parties and celebrate our differences.
About how much rent can we expect to pay by living in the community?
What about public transportation? My wife nor I drive. She works 3d shift at Walmart and I work 2d shift. Living in Compton, would we be able to be near public transportation that would take us to the nearest Walmart?
What about walking to nearby stores? Can we walk or would we have to use the bus?
Lastly, do you think the people there would be open and accepting to us with me coming from Alabama?

Good for you, though I hardly think you need to be "Left Wing", "Ultra Liberal", or even a Democrat to embrace diversity.

Compton is not the most racially diverse place in Los Angeles. If you are white, black, or hispanic (of any race) you will "blend in" but other races make up a pretty small percentage of Compton's population. Becoming active in the community and throwing parties is a very good way to make friends, whatever race you happen to be. One caution I would give you is to research the gangs active in the area first and try to avoid a prevalance of those colors during outdoor gatherings. You'll also want to check with the police department about what permits you'll need and any other advice they might have for you on security.

That depends on what you want to rent. Prices are generally lower, but because it is a centralized area with good access to many major freeways, they are still high. You could expect a range of 600 for a 1 bedroom apt to 3000 for a house.

You might want to consider living close to your work. Commuting is the worst aspect of living in Los Angeles, even at off-hours as the bus lines often do not operate all night in all areas. Bus lines are fairly extensive, but they tend to be slow and transfers are something you want to avoid. Compton was recently ranked as one of the best places in the country to start your own business, so you might want to consider going into business for yourself or looking into working at a local business which might offer better pay and benefits than walmart. You can use google maps to look up the nearest WalMart, but they are somewhat hard to come by in the more urban areas.

You can easily walk to a corner store and grocery from pretty much any inner-city community within the LA metro area.

Probably. Especially if you are good neighbors and get involved in the community. LA is full of transplants from all over the country, so you may even find someone who once lived in your area or has relatives there. The main thing to keep in mind is to be very careful to disassociate yourself from any sort of gang-related activity as the majority of crime in the Compton area is inter-gang violence.

You don't need to be a "left-wing, ultra-liberal Democrat" (an oxymoron in itself) to embrace diversity. No need to reply; I am just making a statement. I won't argue politics on this forum. As for living in Compton, sponger gave good advice.

Just look at the handle history and realize who you're 'helping'.

Even if the OP isn't serious, someone else might be interested in moving to Compton and come across this post.
I'd consider living there if it wasn't such a commute. It would make it easier to run my business for various reasons.

Because of Sponger42's kind and thoughtful response to what is obviously a troll, I'm letting this thread stand, but I am closing it. Thanks, everyone, and have a nice day...
