That's what I thought. I'm from the IE and felt pretty much the same way.

That was one of my larger turn-offs about San Diego. I liked the city, but so much lower pay, with so fewer job opportunities, but an equally high cost of living.

I wouldn't mind someone else verifying that though, as it just my impression.

My cousin just moved into a one bedroom in the University Heights neighborhood of San Diego. I think he's paying like $1200 a month! I could probably live in a halfway decent part of LA for that much. He prefers San Diego like many others do, and that's what drives the price up there.

I remember when I first moved there in 1994, I was paying about $400/month for a one bedroom and lived right at Mission Beach, I could hear the waves from my bed.

Yes, your impression is 100% correct.

Having moved to San Diego from Boston I never miss the traffic which makes LA even more undesirable

I loved SD. I feel like the whole "California" image that people have and expect when they come to Los Angeles is actually San Diego.

And Bingo was his name-o.

Something similar happens in SF. I never even knew they were up there gnashing their teeth about us until I moved to the Bay Area, and when I went to SD I experienced something similar. I have no beef with SD, but I've always pictured it as something between a large suburb and small city near the beach. I like it, but I wouldn't live there; it's lovely, but is too small and too slow.

I grew up in LA and I've lived in San Diego and San Francisco and I too believe that SD and SF worry more about LA than vice versa. All three cities are wonderful with a ton of assets and challenges. I love them all, but will probably end up in San Diego just for the laid back, sunny, less traffic environment. I'm retired with a decent income, so I won't worry about finding a job.

San Diego is a great city as long as you don't need to worry about finding a job.
