I can't imagine anybody uses the clichéd "California falling into the ocean" expression in any sense other than facetious humor. If there was an earthquake so strong that California literally sank into the ocean the cataclysm would be so violent that it could kill hundreds of millions of people even on other continents and around the world. A tsunami from such a quake could totally destroy Japan and other Pacific rim countries. It would be the biggest disaster in historic times, unprecedented in human history. It's just a joke. Everybody should lighten up. Anybody who really thinks that could happen should get a clue.

So what kind of damage do you think there really will be? That article says hundreds of thousands will die, but for some reason I think that might be over exaggerating, but who really knows until it happens.

All I know is it will be a disaster of Katrina proportions probably bigger since it will involve over 24 million people!

The band "Tool" and the comedian Bill Hicks didn't help things with their Arizona Bay references.

Lyrics here: SongMeanings | Lyrics | Tool - Aenema

The song is Aenema and it samples parts of Bill Hicks' act when he's talking about Calif breaking off and falling into the ocean.

I just read those lyrics. That's awful.

I'm not quite sure I buy the "hundreds of thousands" will die bit. Our architectural infrastructure is pretty modern and sound. Take for example the HUGE earthquake in Chile earlier this year -- 8.8 (Which is MASSIVE). There were just over 500 confirmed fatalities. I think we'll likely see something similar.

The biggest issue will be the economic and city/state infrastructures which will likely be decimated. We're talking damages in the hundreds of billions of dollars. It will take decades to return to any sort of economic normalcy.

Water, power and telecom infrastructures will probably be destroyed and most buildings will be red-tagged (meaning that the people inside would have escaped without much injury, but the building will have to be demolished). Couple these facts with the the state already being completely broke, and you'll see a complete failure of the state government and a mass exodus of pretty much any business and citizen with the means to leave.

^ Do you think other states and countries will help or will we have to fend for ourselves?

Also, the earthquake in Chille was very deep underground which is why the damage wasn't as bad, but the San Andreas is ABOVE ground

What's important is the intensity, and the Chilean Earthquake had a higher maximum intensity (IX) at the surface than did the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 in San Francisco (VIII), though the intensity farther north of San Francisco did equal the intensity of this year's Chilean quake.

For comparative purposes, the Northridge Earthquake also had a maximum intensity of IX.

The theorized "Big One" would be expected to have a maximum intensity of X or more, with a much more widespread intensity of IX than the Northridge Earthquake (basically, from the Salton Sea to southern Kern County).
