No, I don't, but I'm sure it was. I must have been really scared. I thought it was the end of the world. My grandmother always talked about earthquake weather, about it being extremely hot as a precurser to earthquake activity. I remember going back to school after a week or so. The lunch benches were moved to the center of the playground, and we all cheered as the wrecking ball took down a damaged 3 story wing of our school. Yeah, I was glued to the screen for '94, such pretty blue sky days.

San Andreas would not be THAT bad in most parts of LA.....Antelope Valley would be toast, however.

A quake on the Newport Inglewood Fault would be DEVASTATINGLY bad. Bye bye Westside, LAX, South Bay, Long Beach, and much of OC! There hasn't been a major quake on the Newport Inglewood fault since the 1933 Long Beach quake, and a big one on that fault would kill a huge number of people. (It's so called because it goes into the Pacific in Newport Beach, and passes through Inglewood.)

A quake on the Southern San Andreas in the past would haven't caused much damage, but due to the growth in population in the Inland Empire it would be quite deadly and cause a large amount of property damage if it happened now. Also, with more skyscrapers downtown, there'd be some considerable damage there. There'd be damage throughout the whole county to varying degrees though. The San Andreas Fault, however, doesn't menace L.A. as much as it does the Bay Area.

The last two "big ones" have both been on faults far smaller than the Newport Inglewood let alone the San Andreas, in the northern San Fernando Valley, don't know if it could happen again.

LA will be toast when the San Andreas rocks as all the splinter faults in the LA basin will rupture,not to mention most of LA is in a liquifaction zone.When the big one hits they estimate at least 5 minutes of violent shaking.All freeways will be closed and people will be in gridlock trying to escape,fire,hospitals will be overwhelmed.It will make New Orleans look like a picnic.Riots,looting,violence will ensue.If we get a big quake expect hundreds of thousands of deaths and casualties.

I can tell you that this is a not yoke but a fact ,, There is a big big earthquake to hit california and it can actually make california dissapear off the map,, That is a vision that I had on this year for this state.

Funny last few posts. Hey Profetspeaks, any visions on how to spell Prophet? Or was it Profit. I guess by merging the two words that would make you a Prophet out for a Profit. Should we be sending you cash or do you accept checks? What do you see in my future?

I have heard that we are going to have an earthquake. Funny but we have them all the time. Some people tell me it feels like earthquake weather. Not sure what that is because deep in the earth where these things happen the plates that constantly have preasure on them could not care less what the weather is like. I have been in earthquakes in the summer and in the winter. Well our version of summer and winter anyway.

We very well may end up loosing a lot of older buildings. Newer buildings are built to withstand up to an 8.4 earthquake. Our area tops out at just above 8.0 due to the strength of the rock we are sitting on. Another fallacy is that we will break off an end up in the water. A big earthquake recently happened near the border. It was over 7.0 and it did move the ground in some parts as much as 33 inches. Not the amount needed to break off a portion of the state but if you have a building that is split in 2 then it could be a concern. With the movement eventually Los Angeles will be in the Bay area. It may take a few million years, but it will happen.

These threads get re-circulated every once in a while; almost 3 years ago before Profetspeaks articulated [if you want to call it that] his\her insight into the coming disaster. But the level-headed like SOON2BNSURPRISE [someone who actually lives in California] point out that we will survive like we have all the earthquakes. This is because California is prepared and has building codes unlike most of the world. The earthquake in Haiti was about the same magnitude as the Northridge earthquake yet less than 100 died in LA while 250,000 were killed in Haiti! That is a remarkable figure and a testament to the safety standards in California.

But I suppose a very bad earthquake will hit in our life times and we may very see quite a bit of damage and loss of life. But we have so much to be grateful for just living in California that I think most people are more than willing to take the risk.

Fontucky, can I ask you a personal question? You have lived in California a long time and Fontana is pretty close to some dangerous faultlines. Have you experienced an earthquake that actually caused damage to your house? Besides a few things falling off of shelves are some cracks in the cement, have you had any major structural damage? Have you ever said to yourself after a strong earthquake that I am getting out of California ASAP? I know the Northridge earthquake was pretty bad and a lot of people were really shaken-up literally by it but how many people actually moved out of California because of the earthquake? My guess is that not that many left.
