Should i relocate from suburban London - Southern California? (Los Angeles: house prices, neighborhood)

In Pico Rivera which is very gang ridden and violent as is the rest of southeast LA County.

Violence is pretty bad in LA County today (although in certain areas you'd hardly know it) but the early '90s were much worse. (Except for the San Fernando Valley, which was considerably less violent and had fewer gang areas in the early 90s than today). LA is actually considered average amongst US big cities for crime.

I'm talking about how areas LOOK. Hackney or Brixton are safer than Compton (not that they're safe by any standard) but there are large parts of South Central that are violent as all hell but don't LOOK bad during the day.

hey no offense but your pics didnt show me anything. the manschester pic it showed me more of the graffiti art style with a really nice court and building.
Look at the nets on the rim, they are still there. hey it might be a dangerous place to you but i just dont feel the same way but step a foot in compton or even drive by it and you will know ur in a dangerous place. oh and the east london pic just showed some more graffiti art with some trash on the ground and i dont know what that proves. but it still looks nice

you UK folks have to be kidding me

There were no pictures of Moss Side or Longsight in Wikipedia's Manchester article.

The greenery has more to do with the climate. L.A. was originally mostly desert, whereas the UK gets plenty of rain.

There are plenty of hood type areas in South Central/South LA where people are living in single family housing and there are palm trees, etc. which one wouldn't find in UK slums.

The big difference is the racial mix. There are no non-Latino whites living in Compton (and the Latinos are overwhelmingly recent immigrants or their kids) whereas UK council estates (projects) and ghettoes are more mixed, even in the worst areas there are some whites, but they have the same ghetto/thug mentality as the blacks and South Asians who live in those areas.

The last time I drove through Compton (about two weeks ago) I saw a cute little kid, about 5 years old, dancing hip hop on the sidewalk.

He needs to move someplace where the weather doesn't suck and opportunities are abound aka LA.

A great number of people not only in Britain but in other parts of the US would think the building shown and the palm tree in the background looked nice - despite the activity going on.

Just wondered, are you familiar with East Coast projects at all? By looking at many of them from the outside and not being familiar with the areas or what goes on there, you'd probably think they weren't that bad, because high rise projects don't exist in LA. But on the inside, like in the council estates of the UK, they're completely trashed, dangerous, and violent as all hell.

As for greenery, if LA had a climate like England does (or like the Pacific Northwest does), then there'd be just as much greenery.

im still not getting what your saying. dont let the palm tree's fool you the climate has nothing to do with it. london just dont seem dangerous period. look at the rough areas of brazil now thats a very bad place and there is green trees and bushes everywhere and still it looks really ghetto there. real dangerous places just have that type of atmosphere and london is not one of them

I never said the area isn't dangerous, I know very well that it is. But someone coming from somewhere else wouldn't think it looked dangerous.

People who didn't know what goes on in Rio's favelas would think some of them (not all) wouldn't look dangerous either. They'd be in for a very rude awakening were they to go there.

My whole point being, one really has to know the area. Like you said, don't let the palm trees fool you. Or the greenery. Or, in the case of British council estates, the presence of whites. Since we were talking Manchester, the Gallagher brothers "thug" background was little different from Tupac's. The difference is that they're still alive, and successful rock musicians don't kill each other like successful rappers do.
