Default Best Police Chief: Parker, Davis, or Gates

All three of these guys had reputations. All three were involved in famous LA crime incidents. (I remember in 1975 something like 500 people were arrested at a Pink Floyd concert at the Sports Arena.....for smoking pot....).

Gates was a rookie cop and started out as Parker's chauffeur. Parker was from the Jack Webb Dragnet era. (I went to elementary school with Jack Webb's kids at Our Lady of Malibu.)

How would guys like these handle today's problems in Los Angeles? Could they?

Less specifically, How would guys like General Douglas Macarthur or General George Patton or even Ronald Reagan handle today's international problems (Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Russia, North Korea?)

Charles, you must be really missing LA. For someone who packed up and moved to Colorado you seem awfully nostalgic.

They all suck. Not one of them was opposed to Special Order 40.

Wait a second, where do you get "Parker" from? Do you mean Parks?

I think I'm a City-Data forum addict and the Colorado boards are pretty boring.

LA is a great place to live in - virtually.

Yes, I'm nostalgic too.

It's still a great place to live - literally too.

You should come back.

In response to your OP, I don't think any of those chiefs were all that great for the city. They were all collectively responsible for creating and perpetuating the paramilitary, us vs. them, racist culture that plaqued the department for decades and which ultimately led to the demise of its image and standing in the community. I do think things have improved largely because of the federal consent decree, the findings of the Christopher Commission, and the reforms and innovations in policing that have been championed post LA Riots and Rampart scandal.
