Hello, very helpful information on this forum. We are a family in our mid-30's with a toddler currently living in West LA. I was offered a good long-term job in the city of Whittier and I am looking for areas surrounding Whittier to settle long term (buy a house, etc.). We have family in West LA so it would be nice not to get away too far. We also want a food school district. We could probably swing someting close to $1M so an upscale safe area would be nice. I was thinking South Pasadena as google maps only show 16 mile commutte from my work but that's by streets only (no freeway). Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

What part of whittier will you be working? Also, by $1M, do you mean 1 million?

South Pasadena makes for a pretty crappy commute. And your million bucks there gets you around $2200 sq ft.

There are really nice super upscale parts of Whittier and also nice nearby communities like Rowland Heights, Fullerton, etc. If you need top notch school, cerritos is not far.

Mansions and castles. No joke.

Do a search on Redfin of the area in the hills between whittier/la Habra/la mirada and the hacienda heights/Rowland heights area with a minimum $500k price.

You should assume that traffic flows as slow as 12 mph, on both surface streets and on the freeway. Most days it will be faster, but, whenever there is an accident or bad weather, it will be that slow.

Given that, if you assume you want to have a commute that is consistently 30 minutes or less, you shouldn't move more than 6 miles away from your job.

Live where you work. In Los Angeles County, there is no more important rule than this.

There are some nice places up on the hills by Whittier. I'd look there.

If you want to be in a good public school district, I would definitely consider Fullerton/Brea areas in the northern parts of Orange County.

Friendly Hills is a nice area, but I don't know anything about the schools.
