Plenty of open, remote desert East of L.A. It's not superficial, though.

The hottest months in LA are July, August, and September. Parts of LA are way hotter than others. For example, the Valley is about 10-20 degrees warmer than the beaches.

West Hollywood is very urban, but the distances are still far. You will be able to walk to a lot of restuarants, stores, and nightlife, but you will still have to drive, take a cab, or take the bus to other areas. LA is a very very big and spread out urban city. It is not like NYC or Chicago where you can traverse the entire nightlife area in 10-15 minutes. LA is so big that what is close to one person is far from another. A bar might be in "your neighborhood" but still be a 20 minute walk over almost a mile.

In any case, West Hollywood is centrally located. It is a nightlife hotspot in LA. It is also home to the "Hollywood" industry party crowd. You will really have a good time.

Santa Monica is great too, but you won't have the Hollywood party vibe. Plus, it is far from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, and Hollywood. Santa Monica has plenty of bars/clubs/lounges, but it tends to be the white collar professional crowd more so than the Hollywood types.

I would stay out of Orange County for living. It is great to live there full time, but might be a little boring for an "extended tourist." The amount of things to do and nightlife is much smaller than in LA.

You may have to blow you entire "year out" budget to get what you want otherwise you will just be at a nondescript motel laying by a nondescript pool eating at nondescript restaurants. You can get that anywhere. SUPERFICIAL doesn't come cheap Most people living in those areas are working their butt's off just to make rent.

I could be wrong about that trivial little detail.

Not that it matters either way but:

That map is labeled wrong, as there are not two separate PCH alignments in that area. The smaller box is the old (1920s era) Hwy 1/101 interchange. From that point South you can take PCH another 7.6 miles until it ends at the Cristianitos Rd/I-5 interchange in South San Clemente.

Dude, seriously, what difference would it make given the context?
It is amazing that you felt the need to correct me on this but unfortunately, you were wrong yet you still keep this up.

Initial screen shot and the following is from Google maps, you are saying it is wrong? San Clemente is like at least another 5-6 miles south, nowhere near where PCH connects to I-5:
