I am going to be renting a 2 bedroom apt with a couple and was wondering what is a fair way to split the rent? I don't think I should have to pay half and have them split the other half. Is there any standard on this? And just rent we will be splitting utilities 3 ways.

Thanks guys

There's no standard for this type of situation. From what I just read, it's whatever you (group) decide on. If you can't come to an agreement about rent, you might want to look elsewhere for housing... hehehe

Has anyone been in this situation before that can tell me how they decided to split it?

Yeah, you say "Here's what I am willing to pay for rent. Does that work? No? Ok, see ya later".

This is common sense IMO. What were you hoping to get from a forum?

I haven't been in this situation, but this is what I think is fair. You have one bedroom and they share the other one, but it's still three people. So let's say the rent was $2,000, I'd say you pay $750 and they pay $1,250. You pay a bit more because you have your own bedroom. They pay a bit less than $750 each because they share the bedroom. That would make sense to me. The utilities should be split in three equal parts.

Pay according to the ratio of the square footage of the bedrooms. The bigger bedroom pays more.

Actually it's a little more complicated. We are all friends and have been planning to live together. I just want to do whats fair but I don't know what a fair split would be.

In a roommate situation, remember you are jointly and severly liable. Meaning, the rent is $2000.00/month. If one roommate can't come up with their share of the rent, the other roommates are liable. Landlords do not care what your personal situation/agreement is. The bottom line is the rent is $2000/month.

Rent is split by bedrooms, NOT by the amount of people sharing it (as long as the bedrooms are about equal in size, etc).

Utilities are split by the amount of people sharing the apartment. Three in your case.

If I were in their situation, I'd be a little put out that you weren't willing to pay half the rent, if you were using half the apartment (assuming it is a two bedroom, you have one bedroom, they have one bedroom). It wouldn't be fair for them to each pay a premium and each get much less space for their rent. Utilities should be split three ways, but you acting like because they have to SHARE a bedroom, while you get your OWN, means they should have to pay MORE than you, is selfish.
