Rent is definitely cheaper than NYC. I just moved to a renovated 800 square ft 1 bedroom in Studio City, right off Ventura, and pay 1175. It comes with gated parking and laundry. I lived in crummy little 1 bedroom, 5th floor walk up in NY on the far upper west side and paid 1750.

That's the POINT. You have a large variety of choices in Los Angeles, so housing, gas, food, etc. is really not that much more than in many areas of the country, and certainly less than places like NYC and SF.

And sales taxes are higher, but property taxes are lower than in many areas (try Texas if you want to see high property taxes).

And, no you don't know me or where I live in Glendale, but if your house is worth $2.5-$3M, congrats!

Don't forget that NYC has a personal income tax that ranges from 2.9% to 3.6%.

And to clarify, NYC sales tax (including NYS tax) is 8.875%, which appears to be higher than LA, which I found to be 8.75%.

Independent cities (surrounding "city if la") sometimes have higher sales taxes. Santa Monica is over 9%, for example.

I lived in DC for 25 years and living there is expensive but I find Los Angeles more expensive witb lower wages and the economy seems much healthier in DC. And to buy a home or condo in LA seems so outrages compared to DC. I noticed people call west LA the most desireable part of town but it seems to be filled with unattractive 60's 2 and 3 story outdated vertical blind, hideous carpeted overpriced apts. At least in DC you'll get something with hardwood floors, crown molding and some character at the same price.

Whoever said Chicago is in line with LA is correct. And trust me, people drive alot in Chicago as well. I've put 12000 miles on my vehicle since late July without taking any roadtrips. Gas is tops here. Sales tax is comparable as well. Renting is the same as well. Buying a house in LA is more expensive though. For some reason though, native LA people will always tell you it's soo much more expensive to live there than anyone not NY or SF, but that's not the truth to be honest. I've researched it over and over and over again.

Yeah "New York City" is much more expensive than "Los Angeles city" but that's because Los Angeles is an de-centralized city.. With expensive & cheap areas mixed throughout the basin..
