My families safety, especially with a daughter on the way makes an SUV a no brainer for me.

I assume then you're a perfect driver and nobody has to worry about you making a mistake and plowing into them? BTW, if you're so particularly concerned about safety, why didn't you purchase a Volvo?

They told you. They are concerned with their family, heck with everyone else.

So, are you telling us you drive the Rover because you are the good driver, and wife drives the Volvo because her driving sucks?

Interestingly, a lot of people in L.A. seem to get pissed off about Hummers and other American-made SUVs.
But if you've got a Mercedes, Lexus, or Land Rover SUV, those are perfectly fine. You're being fashionable and stylish.

Do people still invest in these things because there's a slight chance of a freak snow storm in Los Angeles that could cause somebody to miss going to work a day, or perhaps people are concerned the La Brea Tarpits will bubble over onto Wilshire and render passenger automobiles impractical for travel in L.A.?

This is America man, People have the right to buy and drive what they want. If you don't like smog and a bad environment I would suggest Montana.

Now in 2009 I see less of the full size/large SUV's and more of the compact versions. I think there are deals to be had on the lease returns.
One thing I do notice is they still like to drift into the 2nd lane especially while going around curves in the road.

Furthermore, if people are so damn concerned about safety, get a Volvo or some other automobile which dissipates energy via deformation. Not only will you be sued for fewer damages by the competing car if it's your fault, you'll be saving fuel, not obfuscating everybody's view of the road, not placing an undue amount of wear and tear on our highways, etc.

All new cars are built this way now, aren't they?
