That scared me to death when I moved here! I'd never seen it before, so I had no idea to watch for it. There's still times motorcycle drivers go too fast -- if traffic's stopped, go 20, not 60, as we can't see you until the very last second otherwise (especially between carpool lanes and regular lanes, as it's often required to get out of the carpool lane to exit).

I don't agree with it being legal, but it is. I do my best to watch, but I had a motorcycle nearly hit me the other day when I was completely stopped. Now, what can I do about that?

Most bikers follow the rules, because usually going against the rules gets you squashed. If you're entering/exiting the carpool lanes in the appropriate places, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

We (riders) are watching you. We're the most defensive-offensive dirvers on the road.

I don't think most people on the road should be driving, but they're "legal."

See how the street goes both ways? And pray tell me, what's worse, a 400lb motorcycle hitting your car? Or a 3000lb car hitting a motorcycle?

*sigh*

A body shop can re-mount the seat rails further back. Its not that difficult of a job to do.

I agree most motorcycle drivers are good. It's the 5%, or whatever, that makes it dangerous.

The truth is, it is the motorcycle who is at the most risk. And most motorcyclists recognize that. But the minority needs to realize they need to drive safely.

As long as it's done safely, I have no problem with going between traffic. My issue is with those who have no regards to safety.

Then again, as you point out, they're the ones at the biggest risk, so it's really them who should be concerned, I suppose.

Unfortunately, I have been told by many people in the business that California insurance regulations prevent this from being done.

Thats intersting, I know of of someone who had it done. It was a long time ago.. Maybe you should try a small independent shop.

I have no idea why they say it's prohibited. I wonder if it really is?

Personally, it would completely change the vehicles I drive if I could do this! They'd certainly be smaller and better on gas.

I've been driving trucks and SUV's my whole life (since 16), which is about 30 years and I'm female. What I hate about the people that now drive large trucks and SUV's don't know how to drive them. They think they can drive them like a sports car, it doesn't work that way. What I really don't appreaciate is the little girls driving big trucks/SUV's who are on the phone and think there in a little sports car and think they own the road. Someone needs to teach them how to drive a Truck/SUV. I've never been in an accident and that's not bad condsidering I've been driving for 30 years, and I'm a female driving an SUV. The SUV came in handy with 3 boys, being a single mom, and going camping, fishing, surfing and diving with my sons. Now they are all grown-up and on their own and I still drive an SUV. After so many years in a Truck/SUV, I tried driving a car felt like I was sitting on the asfault. Just my opinion ....

I think many people that hate SUV's don't have kids or haul anything around. I could see how you would think an SUV is impracticable. But my wife drives an SUV because there aren't many cars out there that will allow her to: drive our three children around (plus the twice weekly carpool), the kids friends, their backpacks, the dog, soccer equipment, the mountain of Costco food, an Easy Up canopy (for our kids soccer games and cross country meets), that new table we bought, etc. So if there is another type of vehicle that can fit stuff like that in it, the please make me aware. I think the Costco food alone makes a regular sedan impossible. My car can't fit the Costco stuff without it overflowing over into the passenger seats, but my wife's SUV can. Until then, I think my family needs at least our one SUV. Are there people who don't need SUV's- definitely. But many people need a vehicle this size.

I'm wondering, then, what people who had a lot of kids and a lot of stuff did before there were SUV's. (In reality, I don't actually wonder. That was facetious. I was alive in the days before SUVs and I knew families with five children who managed. I have two children, BTW.)

Another interesting thing is that these huge you-knows are harder than heck to get into. After my C-section I couldn't drive my own car (ugh, if you can call it that) because I couldn't climb up into the thing. And my mother-in-law, with the big thing she just has to have, needs help getting into it fifty percent of the time. I have to haul a heavy preschooler and then a heavy toddler up and into this sucker and climb across to get my son into his seat (in the "safe" spot) and I feel like Dr. Livingston half the time. I always wonder if I'm going to need a map to find my way back out.

And on another note:
