I'm specifically looking around 7th street and Gaviota. How is this neighborhood?

Also, is Long Beach getting better in these areas or worse? Or is it the same?

Your final question cannot be properly answered as you provide no baseline.

IMO you would have to go visit and decide if it's an ok neighborhood for you.

Sorry, let me clarify. Is LB getting better or worse in terms of crime rate? Is it getting safer?

Also is the area around 7th street and gaviota getting better? I am looking to buy a house in this area but would like to buy here if it's on an upswing rather than getting worse. I currently live in West LA and when I drive through certain South LA neighborhoods you can tell the area is not getting any better any time soon.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

You really need to specify which part of the city because it's a big city with very different experiences.

That said, in 2010 the city recorded the lowest crime rate in 40 years. In 2011 the city had the lowest number of murders in recorded history. There was a slight increase in overall crime however the baseline again was the lowest crime in 40 years.

Aside from the numbers, the east side of the city continues to have very low crime. To your question about how things are changing, I think the areas where the crime typically happens is shrinking. There are still pockets of crime areas but those areas seem to be getting fewer and smaller in my opinion.
