LAUSD Superintendent Calls for “Cultural Revolution”

Wow. I am impressed! A non-teacher bashing thread! Yeah!

Having worked in LAUSD for 16 years, I can completely agree with most of what is being said here.

The teachers try really, really hard. They deserve alot more of everything than what they get (whether it's free time, help/support, administration, salary, recognition).

But it's just an abysmal system. Why isn't there any flexibility in the system? The schools look like prisons.

You'd think technology would create a more flexible learning environment.

-Why is there still so much emphasis on big heavy books when you've got pdfs, cheap media, cheap video right at your fingertips?

-Why is it still 5 days a week, 9 months out of the year? Why not study from home a day out of the week and do indepedent research, collaboration?

I graduated from a LAUSD highschool 10 years ago...honestly, the place looked like a prison. We need more than a cultural revolution.

The suggestions there would be nice for schools with more motivated/academic students.

A lot of LAUSD schools have students that do not care about school. In the end, the suggestion that could work would be to make the K-8 kids attend for school for a longer period so that teachers will have more influence.
