Lauren, good luck!!!! You can do it! I don't live in L.A. but have visited several times and have friends who do live there, we are moving to L.A. next year. The weather is wonderful, the crime is not as bad as the media has portrayed it to be. If I were you I would look on craigslist and rent.com to give you ideas on cost of living. Also, you will most likely end up working at a salon/spa for some time before you get to actually open your own shop. That's not a bad thing though. You will get to learn the business better and get to know how the system works here. L.A. is different than the rest of America, really it is. I've been to almost all 50 states and SoCal in general is the place you want to be if you want good weather and a liberated population. San Diego is nice too, but more expensive.
Just do your homework, research research research and visit a few times. Talk to people who live in L.A. and just get as much knowledge as possible before making your move. Good Luck!!!!!!!!

I think the best thing for you to do is to go to craigslist.com. When you plan to move here I suggest getting a temporary sublet on that website or rent a temp room from someone around the west side this way you know someone and isn't alone. Check out the rentals and it will give you a price and the locations. The west side is safer for you. When you feel confident you can get your own place. Santa monica is nice but pricier.

My biggest piece of advice to you, is please visit multiple times and get a feel for the city as someone other than a tourist. Visiting here and living here are two completely different things and what you do as a tourist will not be what it's like here. I've known people who have moved here and thrived, but I've also known as many people who ran back home just as fast because LA wasn't the fantasy they thought it was. Do your research and make sure you have spent a lot of time here.
