Hi guys,

I was just contacted by a friend of mine who is considering spending a month in Malibu this coming May with her family (husband and their 3-year old daughter). The couple are in their early 30s.
They are looking for a furnished apartment with all the basics, it doesn't have to be too fancy, but they do want to be as close to the beach as possible. If possible, even on the beach. She asked for recommendations on good neighborhoods/streets (as if anything in Malibu is bad ), as well as any reliable websites where she could look for this type of rental properties.
What's puzzling me is that she didn't mention her budget, so I don't know where to point her to. They're fairly well-off, but not filthy rich. I'm sure a month in Malibu will eat into a lot of their savings.
She did mention however that she looked at Airbnb.com, and she found the prices reasonable. So I went and looked too, but didn't find anything listed for Malibu, only Venice Beach, Santa Monica and around (which I'm not sure she realizes is a different area), however the prices are indeed a bargain for those areas. I mean $100-$150/night for a furnished apartment in these areas???
So, based on that, I'm assuming her budget is up to maybe $200/night for a basic furnished apartment on the beach, or as close to the beach as possible. But then, is that even realistic for Malibu?

She asked me since I live in LA, although, to be honest, I am almost not familiar with Malibu at all. I've been there twice since we moved to LA (we live in Glendale, so we're wayyy far from the ocean) and of course I loved it when I visited, but don't know much else about it.

So if there are any locals or people familiar with that part of LA who would like to offer recommendations on good streets/neighborhoods, or websites with reasonable prices to look at, that would help a lot

Check out VRBO.com, they have a ton of Malibu vacation rentals and are a very reputable site. Stick with rentals that have reviews and accept credit cards or PayPal. Cash and personal checks are a no-no in case of any difficulties.
