Would a Police Officer in Simi Valley or Thousand Oaks be a good job? (Oxnard: crime)

It would be ok unless you wanted people to like you. Only half joking. If you're bright and have an education you can make more in other industries. The Simi Valley PD starts in the low 50's once you become an officer. The Ventura County Sheriff's Department which services Thousand Oaks (TO doesn't have a PD) starts in the 60's.

Isn't it difficult to work in Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks?

I heard they have alot of competition from transfering LAPD officers.

Apply with many departments as you can and go with the first one that hires you. You can transfer easily later.

I did a ride along with Ventura County Sheriff (Moorpark Police) around 1994 or so. I deliberately chose to ride the Saturday 3-11 PM shift so as to experience "something" (knowing Simi, Moorpark and TO have virtually no real crime). The worst things we experienced were a couple of drunks mouthing off at neighbors; I don't think we even had a traffic stop...yes, there was one, an obvious illegal alien...and the deputy I was riding with was compassionate and let him be on his way....

The most memorable event of the night was meeting up with another deputy for dinner at a Numero Uno in Moorpark and watching them get PO'd at the doughy (undercooked) pizza.

Work in East L.A. and you may get to put a couple of bullets into a criminal or two. Which would be a good thing, of course.

Actually, Simi P.D. pays more than the Ventura County Sheriff's Department and offers a much better pension in that the City of Simi Valley is a member of CalPers -- one of the best pension systems in the nation! By the way, if you were to join the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, you wouldn't have any say as to where you were going to patrol. Firstly, you will be confined to working the jail for a good 5 years, and then, you can move to patrol but only where there is a vacancy and seniority gets preference. So, you may get stuck working Fillmore, Moorpark, El Rio, Ojai, Thousand Oaks, etc.

As far as your question is concerned, both Simi and Thousand Oaks are gerat places to work. Both are very politically and socially conservative communities that support local law enforcement. But, if you are looking for action, then you may want to consider LAPD or even Oxnard. I hope this helps.
