We spent 10 days in San Diego last summer. It took us two days to see the San Diego Zoo. Both days we showed up at opening time (around 9 AM IIRC) and stayed until about 2 PM.. At that point the zoo becomes very crowded, a bit hot, and loaded with moms and strollers. Still a must see if you get the chance.
We needed another 3 days to visit Balboa Park, which the zoo is connected to. This place was amazing with beautiful grounds and a number of interesting museums. Another 2 days were spent exploring the Seaport Village with its lovely shops and entertainment. Also took the SEAL amphibious boat ride in the harbor which was fantastic. Just an idea of how much there is to do and we just scratched the surface, never really getting to the beaches.

Your list is very inspiring. I will probably steal it to use for our summer trip!!

Two days for the zoo? That zoo must be huge. I think it may be best for me to just spend a weekend down in San Diego. Sure please use the list. I couldn't find a comprehensive list so I'm sure many people should find it helpful. I will keep adding to the list as I find additional information. I want to get the most of this trip.

UCLA is a great place to go visit. The red brick buildings are really beautiful and also the interiors of Royce Hall and the Library. There is a sculpture garden on campus, as well. Afterwards, walk around Westwood village, grab some food like some cookies/ice cream sandwich at Diddy Riese. Summers are quiet/almost empty on campus from afternoon/nights/weekends.

Enjoy your vacation, but know that a vacation is not the same experience you will have once you live here. As the voice of reason (since you are considering relocating here) keep in mind that you will not be going to these places all the time. Even if you think you would, the city often has other plans for you. For example, last week I went to Disneyland... the 405 interchange was closed, as was the 134. Ended up wasting most of the trip sitting in traffic (on the weekend, not even rush hour). Got there late, tired and much poorer as it burned the better part of a tank of premium fuel.

Malibu/Santa Monica:
Rent Bikes in Venice and Ride to Santa Monica on the strand. Hot Dog on a Stick, Carousel and Ferris Wheel on the Pier. Be prepared to explain to your daughter the glass pipes on sale in Venice. Show your daughter you used to skate, back in the day VeniceSkatepark.com
McCabe’s Guitar Shop, Santa Monica, McCabe's Guitar Shop
Mailbu Pier, Malibu Inn across the Street
Getty Villa Museum Visit the Getty
Topanga Canyon: Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum, The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum (theater), Inn of the Seventh Ray & Froggy’s (dining)
Malibu Creek State Park, where you can rock-dive (probably illegally) into fresh water, Malibu Creek State Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Paramount Ranch, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area - National Park Site:Paramount Ranch (U.S. National Park Service)
Paradise Cove, already recommended. I’d go in the day-time and let your kids play on the beach, whilst you enjoy a Mojito with freshly-pressed cane juice under a palapa on the sand. The Beach Cafe | Paradise Cove, Malibu
Neptune’s Net Neptune's Net - Seafood Restaurant

You could keep heading north in to Ventura and Santa Barbara from there.

LA’s not for everyone, but there’s no place quite like it.

the magic castle is a neat place and worth checking out if you can get in. without an invitation from a member, you'll need to make dinner reservations ($$$). if you eat dinner there i believe you get priority to the shows in the different theaters all located within 'the castle'. some of the theaters are quite small (<20 person capacity), so this can be quite advantageous. they also have a very strict dress code, so be mindful of that. having said that, they have some of the top talent in the world perform there, so it's worth it IMHO.
