Hello everyone!

I'm taking a much needed break from our Nation's Capital (Washington, DC) and heading out west this summer to LA. I'm bringing my 11 y/o daughter with me. I'll be working from home during the day (6am - 2pm PST) and enjoying the sites in the afternoon on weekdays and on the weekends.

A. Renting a house in Hollywood - check!
B. Rental Car - check!
C. Summer Camp for Daughter - check! - if anyone has any other recommendations please let me know I'm open to suggestions

I'm gathering a list of things to do and would welcome any other recommendations. I also don't mind taking days off from work to do things. I'm pretty flexible. Here's what I have so far:

1. Griffith Park Observatory
2. Walk of Fame
3. Mann's Chinese Theater
4. Pantages Theater
5. Runyon Canyon Park
6. Hollywood Bowl - check for concerts
7. Kodak Theater - check for shows
8. Staples Center - check for shows/sports games, etc.
9. The Grove
10. Farmers Market
11. Santa Monica Pier
12. Malibu - driving the PCH
13. Venice Beach
14. ABC Studios
15. Paramount Studios
16. Universal Studios
17. Beverly Center - shopping
18. Arclight Hollywood
19. Pinks - gotta get a hot dog
20. Peterson Automotive Museum
21. TMZ Tour Bus
22. Warner Bros. Studio Tour
23. Game shows/talk shows
24. Richard Simmons cardio class in BH

If LA agrees with me I would consider relocating. I'm taking these 6 weeks to see and do as much as I can while in LA. I'm looking for a change of environment and I'm not really feeling east coast anymore. Any advice about where to live, good schools (middle/high schools) is appreciated. My daughter is in 6th grade now. My job goes wherever I go - all I need is internet. I make $135/yr and it's just me and my daughter. I would rent first of course before buying any property. I've been reading many of the posts and you all give great advice so I trust this would be the best place for me to get the real 411.

Thanks to all in advance for your responses!!

Perhaps some museums? Getty, Getty Malibu, Huntington, Norton Simon. Another auto museum with musical instruments is Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar.

Based on some of your list, how about Rodeo Drive?

Griffith Park also has bike paths, hiking trails, horse paths, etc.

A weekend trip to Hearst Castle

Other things in LA county to do:

Huntington Gardens, LA County Arboretum in the San Gabriel Valley.
The Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.
Taking the Metro Red Line Subway which has interesting things to see inside some stations.
Downtown LA is very beautiful buildings to see.
Check out the UCLA Campus, especially the library and maybe some sports.
Many museums like the ones across USC or the Getty Center or LACMA.
LA Zoo.
Take the boat to Catalina Island maybe spend the night.

While not in LA, there are many things to see and do in neighboring counties within a 2-3 hour drive which is great for a weekend or day trip:

Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park and see all the stars at night.
San Diego, San Diego Zoo, Legoland
Santa Barbara or Ventura County beaches.
You can also take a less than an hour flight to Vegas.

Thanks everyone! I'm looking up some of the suggestions now. Getty Museum looks good - my daughter loves art and is a pretty good artist herself. The Hearst Castle looks magnificent! Still looking ...please keep the suggestions coming.

WOW! If I had my own vehicle with me in LA I would definitely do the California Sports Club thing at the Auto Club Speedway. I wanna go fast...lol...Talladega Nights is one of my favorite movies. Will look into being a spectator though.

San Diego Zoo and Greek Theater (schedule not released until March) are officially added to the list. I might not want to leave LA - so many things to do. I'm still looking....keep 'em comin'!

I suggest taking your daughter to the La Brea Tar Pits and La Page Museum (Home Page | Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits).
