Thanks for the replies! Renting v. Buying will be a big decision. We currently have very little debt. About to go kill it at these interviews. Thanks again!

Huh? 15% is less than traditional employees make! When I was self-employed, I paid about 50% in taxes

That's not correct. Federal taxes are on a progressive scale with the lowest amount of income taxed at 15% and progressive moving up to 35% or so.

Kids are 2-8. We are home bodies with a penchant for doing free stuff so we don't need a ton of discretionary income. Just need to be sure we can pay bills.

Where should I look? Lakewood maybe? Can I do this?!?!
Renting or buying?
Budget?

I work in El Segundo.

The problem with El Segundo is most everything close is either very expensive or it has an edgy feel and lower performing schools.

Maybe Torrance
Maybe El Segundo itself
Maybe Los Alamitos/Rossmoor
Maybe Cerritos (my boss comes in from there on the Green Line)

There are a ton and a mean a ton of vanpools that serve El Segundo from everywhere from San Clemente to Temecula to Palmdale to Ventura.

Lakewood would be a long commute. Checkout your morning route on Google Maps and click on Traffic. When there, you can select what the traffic typically looks like when you go to work and back home. El Segundo is close to LAX and traffic is almost always a nightmare. There are still some nice areas in Hawthorne, North Redondo Beach, and Gardena that are affordable. North of the airport is Westchester - it is part of LA, but still has very nice areas (not sure of the price range). El Segundo is an awesome family community if you can afford to live there - good schools too.
