I just chanced upon this thread-I'm in san diego, and OP could find a one bedroom for under 800 in parts of Normal Heights and North Park, in central SD, about 20 min. from the beach. Urban, mostly safe-but varies by block or street sometimes [but not gang shootouts or t.v. steretype, by any means]. Just a mention, b/c SD does tend to have lower priced options than LA, for someone starting out. A car is pretty much necessary, however.

Also, general comment: I am seeing SO many threads lately, full of CA stereotypes-I'm thinking feb. 2012? Really? People still think it's like that across the whole state of 40 million people? huh. It's a very diverse place, and that includes LA. Lots of different lifestyles.
