Hollywood is about an hour down the freeway, but allow an hour and a half because the traffic can be really heavy.

You'll enjoy Westlake. It's the most beautiful and pleasant town. If you need a nice hotel, the Hyatt just off the freeway is very convenient.

I'm from the Westlake area, it's alright, it's very suburban and boring for young people- though recently we have seen the addition of a few lounges. It's uppity, it's pretty, clean, sterile, high income, spoiled, mostly white...not trashing it, but I've lived it. Santa Barbara is pretty cool, relaxed and the ocean...Westlake is just hot. Hollywood is still a bit run-down but they are presently engaged in a massive redevelopment project that won't be completed until 2010. Los Feliz and Santa Monica are great as well.

it will take close to two hours depending what day and time you leave. half of that trip will be spent going through the Sepulveda Pass-the busiest stretch of freeway in LA probably, maybe the country

So it won't take two hours. I make the commute every day. In most cases you are looking at 45 minutes to an hour. 1.5 hours if there is an accident.

A better route to get to Hollywood from Westlake is to take the 101 all the way into Hollywood. A slightly more scenic route would be the 101 to Coldwater Canyon or Laurel Canyon to Sunset Blvd. But the 405 and the Sepulveda pass should be avoided completely.
