Hi, I was recently accepted to CalArts in Valencia and am looking for a place for my partner and I. After moving from NYC, we're hoping for a pleasant commuting distance and a walkable, downtown feel. I'm somebody that gets antsy in suburban areas (which is what Santa Clarita looks like for the most part) but am more comfortable in either a rural environment or somewhere like Silver Lake / Downtown L.A. with hopefully $1,000-ish rental prices. Any ideas? Thanks everybody!

Factoring everything, I strongly urge you to live near the campus and minimize your commute (and especially now that gas is way over $4/gal) - if you plan on attending full time. Santa Clarita is a huge place with lots of housing options.

33 miles from Downtown LA to Valencia and about the same distance from Silver Lake/Los Feliz. Its a reverse commute, but still 33 miles.

The City of San Fernando is close to Cal Arts and it has a lot of nice, older architecture. Its main streets (San Fernando Rd) aren't exactly charming, but is has potential. At least it feels like it has some history behind it. And, it is fairly cheap. I would be a good compromise, I think.
