I have been looking for a rental in Pasadena for nearly 4 months. I live here currently, but my neighbors SUCK.

Well, I'm nearly ready to give up on Pasadena and am looking towards Arcadia. The only thing I know about Arcadia is the Santa Anita Mall, the Arboretum, and...yea, that's pretty much it. I don't have kids, so schools don't matter to me.

I've seen a few rentals on Huntington Drive there, heading towards Santa Anita....is that something to consider or not?

I don't want to leave my beautiful Pasadena, but rental prices are outrageous, they ask for a LOT for so little, and it's become over-crowded (I blame the Metro rail!).

So, should I head to Arcadia? I think my commute to work (Glendale) will not be the best, though...

And no, I don't want to live in Glendale/Eagle Rock/Burbank/SFV.

Arcadia is safer than Pasadena. Clean and quiet streets with no graffiti. Lots of high-income Asian (Chinese and Taiwanese) residents... that means lots of authentic Asian restaurants and eateries, too.

Too bad you don't have kids because Arcadia's schools are among the best schools in the whole LA County.

You might add about 20-30 minutes to your commute even though Arcadia is only a few miles from Pasadena. That 210 is jam packed during rush hours.

Go ahead and see what the rentals are like. Since school district doesn't matter, there's no reason to consider city borders - just look at homes and neighborhoods. Don't worry about the mall or the Arboretum - you'll be spending all your time on your commute.

In Arcadia you will pay extra because of the schools, whether you need them or not.

That bad? What if I take surface streets to the 134?

I already found a couple of places, and believe me - cheaper in Pasadena!

You guys are scaring me about the commute, though...

I live in North Glendora (I walk/bike to work, but my wife has a 210 commute).

Edit: I called my wife, and she said from Baldwin Ave (Arcadia mall exit) to the 134 in rush hour is about 20 minutes.

I take it back. The commute probably isn't so bad. Try it once or twice just to be sure.

I can't speak to the commute now because I moved away six years ago, but I used to work in Burbank and visit my parents in Arcadia after work on Friday nights. I would always get off the freeway right before the 134 merged with the 210 (I believe it was the Orange Grove exit). If you stay on longer than that, you usually end up in bumper-to-bumper traffic. The surface street route wasn't that bad at all.

Definitely true that the OP would most likely add 20 minutes to his/her commute one way, even on surface streets, but it may be worth it to get out of a neighborhood h/she doesn't like.
