The Wilshire Blvd. sidewalks, from the VA to SM, look awful. They're the same sidewalks that have been there since I was a child, and since then they've become a patchwork quilt of various cuttings, fill-ins, etc. and then the usual wear consisting of cracks, sunken patches, etc. -- they really look awful. Furthermore, there are innumerable little black spots stuck to the sidewalks, as most merchants do not seem interested in power washing the sidewalk in front of their location -- they probably believe the sidewalk is already in such poor shape that cleaning it won't do much to make it look any better.

The sidewalks of the Sierra Ave central business district in Fontana are pristine. In fact, the whole CBD is clean and well-kept.

Yep, Wilshire Blvd's sidewalks are pure crap. The irony being that there's been and continues to be a lot of development, but they don't focus on the basics that will get people (buying customers) coming back for more. I've noticed neighborhoods with business improvement districts are very good about power washing their sidewalks and scraping up the gum. It's the little things like this that makes an area nice. When I used to work at Magic Mountain ages ago, we did a daily combing of the ENTIRE park, scraping up gum. We were 10 men deep, just walking and scraping. Good times.

my closest commerce area (montana ave) is very well maintained. I've certainly been in the area you're describing and it's awful - although - i'm never walking very far.

ventura blvd near my home is not very walkable but the sidewalks are fine. i've never really thought about it too much, so that must mean they at least meet my expectations. the same goes for a different section of ventura blvd near my office. they certainly aren't pristine, but definitely functional.

I love that area on Montana. It's a big step up from the West L.A. part of Wilshire west of the VA. That whole business district on Montana from the library down to where there was a Blockbuster Video is so nice, clean, and pleasant. Why does the city of SM get it, yet the southern border of Brentwood looks so comparatively awful.
