There are quite a few less Sizzler restaurants in Los Angeles now than a few years ago -- why is this so?

Like so much else in society they served a purpose but progress took over. Sizzler, though one of my favorites, is nothing more than fast food and this isn't exactly what many want today. Fast food is losing some of its shine, large chains are giving way to more specialized dining and ethnic dining is the choice of many today. Add to that, the buffet style restaurants, which is what Sizzler has become isn't as popular. In the original days, back in the 60s Sizzler offered mostly sandwhiches and a couple of steak entrees. There were no salad bars, the restaurants were very small and a great place to pop in for a cheap, but somewhat healthy lunch or dinner. Then they decided to add salad bars, then they extended the menu, then this and that. Pretty soon Sizzler was just another fast food eatery with a salad bar.

Being from Texas, but with family in California, my perception is that Sizzler was popular in both places in the 70s. But, they disappeared in Texas not long after that. I do recall seeing them in Ca later, but they seemed like a ghost from the past. In my mind, I tend to lump them together with Steak 'N Ale, another 70s concept that went away.

Is SoCal the place where theme restaurants past their prime breath their last gasp? Not that I don't miss of of those places (like the Magic Pan), but its an interesting thought ...

Gosh, now i remember El Torito. Are there any of those left in SoCal? They disappeared from Houston in the early 80s, but I think I ate at the one on the Redondo Pier a few years ago. Are they still around

A lot of national chains are based in California so it makes sense that they'd hang on the longest here even while failing in the rest of the country.

But I keep seeing commercials for Hometown Buffet, so I find it difficult to believe that people no longer want buffets. I liked the Sizzler buffets, and I'm disappointed that many Sizzlers have closed and the closest one to my home is about ten miles away.

Well I guess I'm just not as fancy as most other Westsiders. Now if you'll excuse me, the NASCAR is on the television and I need to crack open a Coors.

People iN LA still love fast food - don't get me wrong. I love fast food. Lately fast casual is on the rise too.
