Is Palmdale a good area for a student? I've been looking for low-priced areas, and noticed Palmdale has extremely cheap rentals in comparison to the rest of LA county. I am a young college student with a 3 year old girl. I just want a peaceful environment to study and take walks with my daughter.

The High Desert is cheap for a reason.

Thanks, though it's not really the heat that concerns me. I was wondering if anyone knew about the population out there? I read previous posts about the place being infested with gangs, not sure how true that is, as there has been a lot of back and forth posts.

While the heat is certainly part of it, distance from work centers, crime, and poverty are also factors in making it cheap.

Palmdale has never been a prime area. It got progressively worse with the gang issue a few years back. The housing boom hit up there for a while, but it was a magnet for folks trying to escape gang activity and own a home; unfortunately, many of them brought the problem with them.

Where are you going to school? If in the LA area, I would live where I could have a good social life, decent schools and childcare and still be fairly close to school.

I grew up in LA and Palmdale would be one of the last places in California that I would move to (Bakersfield is the absolute last place).

I think you'd be fine out there.

I'm going to school in Pasadena. I wanted to move there, but noticed Palmdale has all kinds of good deals. Idk if I could deal with gang issues.. That's what I'm trying to avoid along with the noisyness of LA, which is where I currently reside at. I hear Glendale is a nice area? I've never been there. Anyone know the area?

If you want to move to Pasadena, then you don't want to move to Palmdale.

Saving a few hundreds a month may not be worth the commute, the isolation, and crime associated with the Palmdale area.

Keep looking and I am sure you can find something in Pasadena or nearby.

If you are going/planning on going somewhere other than a school in the AV, cross Palmdale off the list. If you went to school at AV College for example, commuting wouldn't be an issue.

Re: isolation, isolation is in the eye of the beholder, the AV has 475K people (isolated, really? ), and is still in the most populous county in the entire country.

Re: crime, Palmdale had a lower-than-average C-D crime rate in 2009 and 2010. It's a common misconception that the AV is populated with "trashy people that aren't good enough to live down the hill", which simply is not true.
