Where could I find a standalone, newish house to rent for this much? Is it possible? SF valley? Simi Valley?

If you're willing to go east, you can find houses that are fairly new just outside of LA. But in the city limits? Or the Valley?

How many bedrooms? I've found standalone bungalows (1 bedroom, 1 bath) for under $2000.

Yeah, Simi Valley or Santa Clarita. Or IE like Chino Hills or Corona. I'd say Porter Ranch also, but I think your budget is a bit low for SFR....youd get a new build townhome in that price range.

There are basically no new large housing developments in the city of Los Angeles. It has been completely built out for a couple of decades. You do get an occassional new house built when the previous house on the lot is torn down, but, they are not that common.
