There's a fair amount overlap in physical appearance between Mexicans and Italians since they both have roots in the Mediterranean region. Once Mexicans assimilate, become Americans, speak unaccented English, and get out of the barrio, some could easily be mistaken for Italian Americans. The same goes for lots of Mediterranean and South American people too.

Montebello. Whittier is also a good one.

It's an interesting question...

What comes to mind are Whittier, Hacienda Heights, Montebello and the Covinas, specifically West.

However these aren't wholly affluent, just solidly middle class. And there are of course pockets of affluence within these communities.

So in a sense the areas that Hispanics occupy aren't relegated to just one location.

Not to mention, I think Hispanics have an easier time mixing with white culture than Blacks do, and in turn have assimilated into the more affluent areas like Fullerton, Yorba Linda and the like because they can.

And to bring it full circle, it is exactly that "European Ambiguity" that allows Hispanics to assimilate better. Being half-Hispanic, I've gotten everything from Mexican (Cholo), to Arab to Jewish (when I have a beard), to Irish.

I always felt Whittier was probably the closest to this, so yeah, that makes sense.

I also felt that affluent Mexicans, and maybe even Asians, seem to move to the same areas as the affluent Whites do. There are some Blacks who live in these areas too, especially Hancock Park..for some reason, I know 6-7 Black families over there, but Baldwin and Ladera still attract more of us than any other area.

I can agree that it may be easier for the Latinos to mix in with White culture, so that makes sense.

I think it's because affluent Mexicans have more education. With more education come an improved elocution, a better vocabulary and an enhanced personal presentation; so in a sense, we become less stereotypical.

Italian Americans have been in the States longer, and have assimilated and acculturated better, so those of us who have olive skin tend to get lumped in with them. We also get lumped in with Persian, Black Irish and part-Asian folks too.

As an American of Mexican descent, this does not bother me. I actually find it sort of amusing.

Funny thing is I am half Italian and half WASP and sometimes people will just assume I'm Jewish, and actually start talking about Jewish holidays and I find it immensely amusing. I imagine it would be similar for Hispanics who are more or less "white" in almost everything but their ancestry. We have several neighbors who are "Hispanic" but I would have really had no idea until they told me.

Below are the top 5 Mexican majority census tracts, sorted by median household income, in Los Angeles County, 2010 Census:

1. Census Tract 5504, 62.2% Mexican, $98,488.
-An area of Downey 90241, directly south of the 5/605 interchange. Looks painfully lower-middle class via StreetView, however.

2. Census Tract 1060.10, 56.6%; $93,108.
-An area of Sylmar/Olive View 91342, just southeast of Olive View-UCLA Med Center.

3. Census Tract 4053.02, 55.9%; $89,333.
-An area of West Covina 91790, north of the 10 between Sunset and Puente.

4. Census Tract 1041.03, 57.4%; $88,167
-Sylmar 91342, directly north of the 210 and Hansen Dam Park.

5. Census Tract 5300.03, 51.6%; $88,021
-Montebello 90640, south of the 60 between Montbello Blvd and Lincoln. This one seems to have the most expensive housing out of the 5 (known as "La Merced", 60's/70's era bigger tract housing).

Are you offended when compared to an Italian? Now you've offended the Italians.

I've got a better idea... why don't we all stop looking for reasons to be offended? Just let it roll off your back that's broad and strong from generations of picking lettuce.
