What good lake communities do we have in LA?
I know there's Big Bear, but are there any other lakes in LA where it is safe to live, you can go swimming and boating in the lake, and you can get a 3 bed house for under 1 mil? I'm thinking that's not possible, but is it?

And yes, in Big Bear there are many homes much less then one Mil. Maybe not right on the lake but darn close. Housing is pretty reasonable up there.....there are many drop dead gorgeous homes as well--on the lake. Fun to look at but way out of my reach! My sister just sold her home up there, three bedrooms, two baths and a nice sized yard with lots of extras for two hundred and thirty thousand. It was up in Sugar Loaf which is no where near the lake but you have to remember...nothing is very far up there!! And the above poster is right...these mountain communities are in San Bernardino county not Los Angeles county. These two counties are next to each other.

Calabasas
Westlake Village
I don't think you can swim in either. Neither is in the City of Los Angeles, both are in the County of Los Angeles (though part of Westlake lake is in LA County and the other part is in Ventura County).

There is only one natural lake within LA City limits - Echo Park Lake.
You can't go boating there anymore, I wouldn't dare swim in it, and I wouldn't want to live in the immediate vicinity of the lake (although most of Echo Park is pretty safe now, the area right by the park is still sketchy)
As with most big cities, it's not a good idea to venture into parks in LA at night unless there's an event happening in said parks. This is true in LA as it is around the world.

Lake Sherwood and Toluca Lake both are nice but a measly 1 Mil won't get you much,in fact it won't get you anything.Lakeview Terrace is more affordable.

Toluca Lake, like all lakes within LA except for Echo Park Lake, is an artificial lake. It ranks amongst the least widely seen of LA landmarks - even many lifelong Angelenos have never seen it, due to its being inaccessible from the street. $1m for a house on Toluca Lake wouldn't even have been possible in the early 90s let alone today.
