I don't blame him. For the people who say Los angeles is nice and normal, are somewhat true, and also completely wrong at the same time.

There are nice cites, all the cities below are very nice and safe places to live:

Palos Verdes Estates (best city of all, extremly rich, nice, and safe. It's the closest you'll get to an Orange county city)
Pasadena
Rancho Palos Verdes
Redondo Beach
Santa Monica
Manhattan Beach
Hermosa Beach
El Segundo
Culver city
Burbank

Those are the places that I can think of at the top of my head, I'm sure there are some more.

Though, if I think about the bad areas at the top of my head...

Compton
Inglewood
Watts
Maywood
Gardena
Paramount
Hawthorne
East Torrance (and Harbor gateway)
Carson
Bell gardens
West Covina
East Los angeles
South Los angeles
Downtown Los angeles
Long beach (a really spilt city.. can be a really bad area, or a really nice area)
Harbor city
Wilmington
South gate

As you can see, there are lots of bad areas in the Los angeles county. Los angeles itself is one of the worst cities, and South Los angeles is one of the worst areas in the country. (and also Compton, probably the worst city in the country)

Those people who lived in the nice areas of Los angeles all their lives, such as Manhattan Beach are of course going to say Los angeles is nice and a great place to live, and they'll say "don't believe the hype". Although the people living in the bad areas I mentioned above know why Los angeles is infamous for being the worst, and also the gang captial of the country.

Los angeles can be a great place to live. It can also be the worst place to live. It all depends on which city you live in!

Mission viejo is argubably the safest city in the country, and Compton is arguably the worst city in the country, so as you can see it's very diverse, and the two cities are only 35 minutes apart. Although, Mission viejo is techincally in orange county, but Los angeles and Orange County are right near each other. From downtown Los Angeles to Orange county it's only 20 mins away, unless traffic. Which believe it or not, there are times when there is hardly any traffic.

I lived and walked safely in that neighborhood for 10 years, 1992-2002. Definitely not a white neighborhood, but plenty of decent people.

I grew up in the Torrance/LA area of Western Ave. and Carson ST. in the 60s and 70s. I didn't realize what a tough neighborhood it was until I was grown. If you grew up there and lived through it, it made you a stronger wiser person. I left in about 86 for Ventura County. Most people over 4o who grew up there would know who I am from my log on ID. I try to visit and keep up with all the latest from the old neighborhood. If you live in that area god bless you and watch your back. The neighborhood HAS gotten a lot worse in the last 30 years.

BENZBOY15 will become famous soon enoughBENZBOY15 will become famous soon enough
Living in north county San Diego and visiting my Grandma in Torrence once in a while, I can say that L.A sucks. Or at least the majority of it. For some reason, the air quality is 10X worse than here in Encinitas. My aunt lives in Brentwood, which is nice. I agree with the other posters that if you want to live in L.A you should make sure that you have a lot of money so you can live in a gated, safe community or in a safe and pleasant town such as Malibu or PV. Other than that, there really is no point.

I know it's bad to ignore other people's problems, but in todays world you have to. You should put you and your family first above everyone else. Harsh, but true. Try to live in a decent place in L.A and if you can't afford it: Leave.

You shouldn't have taken the job in Los Angeles if that was your expectation. Haven't you "done your homework?" Los Angeles has more foreign born residents than any section of the United States, with 300 illegal immigrants from Mexico or South or Central America entering the city PER DAY. I'm not going to go into the political ramifications necessarily except to say that the quality of life issues here are terrible if you're not rich enough to cocoon yourself.
And not necessary those upscale you name as Palisades, Malibu or the Hills area.

Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Studio City and Toluca Lake all of them south of the Blvd in SFV are mostly white and are expensive but not as Beverly Hills or Bel Air. This in LA City.

If you go really to the suburbs Dana Point, Yorba Linda, Laguna Hills, Alisio Viejo, San Clemente, Laguna Wood, Irvine, Huntintong Beach, San Juan Capistrano, Lake Forest all in OC are mostly white but also expensive.

If you want something less expensive but still white majority, but not only whites, but majority, all many communities in and around Los Angeles, middle-class, not only rich, but not only whites, but no gangs and no violence around, many latinos, black and asian are now middle-class and they live in good communities, try in the SFV Granada Hills, Chatsworth and even Northridge, also Pasadena, Burbank and Glendale, or in many cities around the SGV, as Arcadia, Monrovia, Altadena, Diamond Bar, Monrovia, Hancienda Heights,....

In OC many many communities with large white population and affordable middle-class housing, as Brea, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Fullerton or Tustin. In the IE San Antono Heights, La Verne, Chino Hills or Rancho Cucamonga....

She's in Van Nuys (which is like South Central if South Central had a few alienated underclass non-Latino whites as well as alienated underclass Latinos and African Americans). Most of the population of Van Nuys seems to have either just come across the border or just gotten out of prison, with some good people scattered throughout and having to suffer through the BS (as is the case in South Central and East LA)

Technically speaking, Mount Washington would count as "East L.A. " - and that area is nice and mixed (although it's right near some nasty areas). I don't know if Elysian Valley would count as East L.A. or not, but there are some non-Latino white longtime residents amongst the Latino majority, and it's pretty quiet for the most part. Highland Park (an area I would NOT recommend to anyone due to the level of gang activity) does have some longtime poor non-Latino white residents and some young non-latino whites who have come to the area in search of cheap rents - however be forewarned that the locals are NOT pleased by outsiders coming into the area.

Hancock Park is a very nice neighborhood but it's not "all white" anymore. There are a substantial number of Asians. The only bad thing about Hancock Park would be if one was going to send their kids to public school - sending kids to the nightmare that is Fairfax High is a form of child abuse. (This applies to not just Hancock Park but WeHo and Fairfax as well - all nice parts of town, but those schools are sure awful! This applies for that matter to anywhere else within LAUSD territory. )

L.A. needs strict law enforcement, it seems:
* Have the mayor assume a Giuliani stance
* Hire more and more police officers - Especially try to hire from dying rural towns in other parts of the U. S.
* Levy fines against people who refuse to abide by city ordinances - Do not play games. If people are illegals, their immigration status will be "discussed" if they violate city ordinances, and federal authorities will be contacted if the illegals do not abide by city ordinances and therefore are discovered. For legal residents, if residents are unable to pay fines, seizures of property and loss of custody rights could be used. This way, illegals can stay, but only if they assume a position subservient to the middle and upper classes.
* Arm police with submachine guns, body armor, and helmets

Also, when police create campaigns to expel crime from areas, police should stay to ensure that crime does not return.

Also, if suspected gang members or other violent criminals who live in the L.A. city limits are arrested:
* Police will conduct a sweep of the apartment for any lawbreakers
* If the owner has been found to ignore criminal records/harbor crime, he would be charged with a crime and sent to prison
* If the second condition occurs, the property must be destroyed or converted into non-residential use. A residential facility must not open in that spot for 10 years.

Hiring more police officers would be the key. LA has been underpoliced for decades. LA only has 1/4 the number of uniformed officers that NYC does.

Majoun, some Hancock Park people are zoned for Los Angeles High School - better? Nah.

Would it make sense for Hancock Park to get its own high school?
