Default Santa Monica (Pier area) to Hermosa Beach Commute Advice

What is the best route to take from Hermosa Beach to Santa Monica (Pier area) and back during rush hour times? I need to get into Santa Monica around 7:30 pm and leave back to Hermosa around 5:30 pm. Thanks!!

just take the 405 like everyone else, the side streets won't be any better. fyi, you're looking at about an hour drive each way

You can start by heading north on Highland, until it turns to Vista Del mar, right on Culver, Lincoln to MdR, Left on Fiji way, right on Admiralty way, hug the marina until you come to Palawan way (right) on Washington, left on Washington, right onto Ocean and take that all the way to the pier!

There! I just saved you 30 minutes each way! You owe me a lunch or something =)

We do assume you mean going at 7:30 am and returning at 5:30 pm. Sure hope so. Google Maps says, without traffic, 28-29 minutes using the 405, or 30 minutes using Pacific Coast Highway. Even if you take the 405 most days, good to have an option if there's an accident, etc. on the freeway. Or you just get tired of taking the same route there and back 5 days a week. Bus options, mainly using PCH, look like a drag.

I think that would be at least an hour each way. I live in SM and drive to south bay (opposite of you), and it takes me 30 min in the morning and 45 in the afternoon. But my way has limited traffic. Your commute will be in heavy traffic.

Good luck.

Forgot to mention, I take 405. It is definitely packed in the directions you are going, but I am not sure there would be a better alternative.

Maybe try Aviation for the southern part of your drive and the West LA residential surface streets for the northern part. I think the firt half of your afternoon drive will be by far the worst part. The 10 east in the afternoon is a parking lot so getting to the 405 from SM will be hellish. The major surface routes (Wilshire, Santa Monica blvd) are also parking lots. You might be able to move on the residential surface streets but it will not be easy.

Sorry, but that commute has a very strong directional volume, and you happen to be going the same direction as everyone else.

One more piece of advice. Avoid PCH through Venice and marina del ray at all costs. Trust me.

Hi Cluckr7,

I am moving to SM for 3 months (coming from the East coast). I'll be working in Manhattan Beach.

Any advice on the best roads to take? It looks like you take a similar route.

Live somewhere south of the 105 Fwy.
Seriously. Same rent prices, arguably better neighborhood anyway.
