tired of cold rainy east coast, off to USC for college from new england suburb outside of boston. Never lived in a big city before, other than NY which i absolutely HATED because there were so many high rises.....

can anyone suggest some things i MUST do while living in LA? i absolutely LOVE warm weather and sunshine so i hope i end up loving LA enough to live here rather than go back to grad school back east

Normally I don't mind answering these kinds of questions, but surely, in the history of this forum, and the entire history of the internet, someone, somewhere, has answered such a question.

Have you tried searching, or googling you question?

I hadn't realized that the standards of admission for USC had gone down to such a low level

Before classes start try to make your way out to as many beach cities as you can, ie; Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach. Just stroll about, hit some of the bars and take in as much as you can. Hit hot spots like Pinks, Tito's Tacos, the Stinking Onion and In-N-Out, et al. Visit some of the studios and get in the audience for a live taping of a show. Try to get on a game show. Try to get tickets to a premiere. Drive up to San Francisco and beyond. If you hook up with some Hispanics who'll look out for you, step over into Mexico for a day trip or weekend.

Experience as much as you can and set it to memory. When you get older and join the rat race you'll have fond memories to reflect on.

I'd worry first about where to live. I assume you've been to USC so know what the area is like. I personally prefer the area around UCLA, but I was a student there. There are no must-dos. Nothing obligatory. It's up to you, and we don't know very much about your interests, budget, even your mode of transportation (criticaL L.A. area). Since you'll be there for an extended period of time, I'd get a good guide book, and also took to people on and off campus once you arrive. I hope you know it's not always warm in the area. But first concentrate on finding a place to live. And reading up on places to go. Once you get on campus you'll be busy studying but you will be able to talk to people, look at the travel section of the Los Angeles Times (www.latimes.com), etc.
