My partner & I will be moving to LA in the Fall from Atlanta. 2 females, early 30's with 2 dogs. We would like to know some safe, decent areas near Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and Children's Hospital Los Angeles on Sunset. Looking for a 1 bedroom, pet friendly apartment with rent no more than $1600-1700 monthly. Is this even a realistic possibility? Our safety comes first and foremost, as 1 one of us may be alone at night. Being fairly close to either hospital would be a giant plus so that commuting wouldn't be a nightmare. LA is so massive and seems to have so many neighboorhoods within the city and we have no idea where to begin. Any help, advice, recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Look in Los Feliz - safe, near Griffith Park, near the hospital complex, near public transportation, walkable commercial areas, great restaurants/nightlife, sounds like you have plenty of money for a one bedroom there... Another option is Silver Lake, though its a big further - it offers more houses but there are also lots of apartments.

I would recommend living in the Miracle Mile neighborhood, located centrally between Westwood and Hollywood. I've lived here for several years, I live alone and I feel very safe walking at night. Lots of young families living here with pets.
Apartments are beautiful and have lots of character, mostly built in the 1920s. If you live closer to Wilshire, it's a 30 minute bus ride on the 720 to Westwood. I live in a (non-petfriendly) 1-bedroom, hardwood floor, 800 sq ft apartment for $1,000 all utilities included. Post office, the Grove, the Farmer Market, LACMA, the La Brea Tar Pits, the Folk Art Museum, Trader Joes, yoga, it's all within walking distance.
